Art & Life with Carmem Gusmao

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carmem Gusmao.

Carmem, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I am a Brazilian born artist, currently working and living in California since 2002. My work is founded in my life .It almost autobiographical. I have passion for old ritualized cultures and signs. In The Brazilian Amazon, where I grew up physically and spiritually, I dove near the multicolored clay that runs in the riverbed and found the seeds that germinated in a thousand colors and shapes between my paintings and ceramics .I lived with the Kayapos Indian people between the river and forest and learn about body painting using natural colors from fruits. The constant subject in my paintings are nature; trees, birds, flowers and mountains. I am an artist for 43 years. I have a degree in psychology, I am a certified Dream Builder Coach from Life Mastery Institute in Los Angeles, and I currently speak English, Portuguese, Italian and Spanish. I use to live in Miami Florida from 2008 to 2015 and this year I am finalist in 3 Art categories for the Brazilian Press award that will be in Florida next May 8. I have my art studio in Temecula California with my amazing and supportive husband.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I think we artists are committed with the world; we should use our art as a voice that create changes and beauty in the world. I use many kind of medias, but I love oil on canvas. I really believe that one artist will use as many surface they can in order to make art, I make wearable art, functional art, recycling art and if I don’t have any supplies I am still able to do art with make up or trash. I love to do big installations like this one Roots and be able to teach kids how to make a better world. I love people, I love to help them to believe they can have a life they truly love and I use my art to communicate. I didn’t choose art but art choose me. ART is like the air that I breathe every day.

How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
Success is when you are able to make your living doing what makes you fell alive and passionate. You need to be self-motivated, focused, and determined with ability to communicate in different medias and audiences.
