Art & Life with Charisma and Jesus Mendoza

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charisma Mendoza and Jesus Mendoza.

Charisma and Jesus, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Jesus and I have always dabbled in some form of creativity. I completed my graduate studies in Interior Design, and Jesus is a self-taught painter and carpenter. It wasn’t until planning our wedding that we realized the potential of combining our talents. I purchased an antique settee to reupholster for our reception lounge. I was so excited to take on such a large project until we noticed how damaged the back legs were. Instead of calling it quits, Jesus came to the rescue and completely refabricated the legs. Since then we have steadily grown our knowledge and skills in refurbishing vintage furniture as well as crafting our own home goods.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
Our business is called Mezcla Designs because we love to mix and match materials and patterns. Taking the minimalism of Mid Century Modern and incorporating cultural materials. Our specialties are talavera tables, reimagined vintage pieces, and decor for the home. We’re still evolving our style, but we gain a lot of our inspiration from traveling. We want to expose people to something they may not have seen before and connect art with functionality.

How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
Our greatest success as artists is crafting something that brings so much joy to someone else. The love you gave to create a piece is living on somewhere else. It may sound cheesy, but it’s what motivates us to keep on creating.

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. It’s going to happen. Take everything as a learning experience. Only focus on your work and ideas. Comparing yourself to others is only a distraction from real progress.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
You can see what our current projects are on our Instagram or website We also sell made to order items on our Etsy. For locals, you can catch us at outdoor markets throughout San Diego this Fall. You can also reach us by email to collaborate on commissioned pieces!
