Art & Life with Geena Crawford

Today we’d like to introduce you to Geena Crawford.

Geena, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I took the first major step towards becoming a professional photographer when I decided to include it as one of my majors at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Before then, I did not ever think about photography as a profession, just something that I had an interest in. I did not know what I wanted to do as a career, or even as a major before that (I had chosen Italian as a major before that, however, I did not know what I wanted to do with it, I just knew I liked it). I always knew that one day I wanted to own my own business. I did know that.

That is how I grew up, both of my parents owned their own business, my grandparents had a bunch of different businesses over the years, it was just in me, and I knew I wanted to work for myself. How I was going to do it, I didn’t know. I had so many different ideas, from cupcake shops, to paint your own ceramics shops (like Color Me Mine), to frozen yogurt, tons of different ideas, but nothing stuck. Photography ended up sticking!

Although not at first! I decided to major in it, however, then I went back, thinking it was going to be too difficult to get clients and directing or even speaking to the clients was extremely daunting to me at first. So after college, an amazing opportunity to work in a dental office fell into my lap, which I stayed at for about a year and a half until my husband (who at the time recently joined the Navy), and I got married in my beautiful hometown of Lyons, Colorado! It was around then that one of my good friends asked me if I would do senior photos for one of her co-worker’s daughter, which I was very hesitant to at first, but then ended up doing them.

I fell in love, I had an amazing time. I loved the photos, I was hooked. I ended up doing a photo shoot for some other friends, which led to other photo shoots, and this was the start of my business! A few months later, I moved out here, to San Diego, to be with my husband, and I decided that I would just do what I could to start a business doing photography out here. Next thing you know, two and a half years later, I am where I am now, and I couldn’t be happier!

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a lifestyle photographer specializing in family, newborn, and maternity photography. I have a few goals for my sessions. I want my clients to be comfortable and have a good time. I want them to feel natural and their-self. And in the end, I want them to have a collection of images that reflect that and tell their unique, perfect story.

Let me start with Why. The reason why I got into photography is because I saw beauty in the world with my eyes, and I wanted a way to capture that beauty and keep it. It is simple as that. I would drive by this lake on my way to work, and it was so beautiful, and I wanted to capture that beauty, at that moment, and keep it, so I could look back on it and see it again. I love that photography gives me the power to do that.

What I love about photography is that I can apply my reason “why” to my sessions. I get to work with beautiful families experiencing a beautiful time in their lives, and I get to capture that beauty for them and give it to them to keep, so they can look back and always see it again.

It is that simple! It makes me happy and it is amazing I am able to share that with so many people!

How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
The definition of success as an artist, to me, is being happy doing what I love to do and getting to share my work with others.

I feel like the qualities that are essential to success as an artist are the ability to create balance in life and to always be willing to grow and learn.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
People can see my work in a few different ways! The best way is to visit my website, however, I also post a lot to Instagram and Facebook!

Each session I do is a way of supporting my work! I love working with all of these different families, and it makes me so happy when they receive the final product and love it!
