Art & Life with Melanie Torres

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Torres.

Melanie, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’m a film school graduate who is passionate about photography. Before graduating, I was working for an attorney who was short staffed. I slowly moved up in his firm through the years and have filled my free time with photography. It’s the only thing that could keep me sane when working in the insane world of the law office.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I love to photograph subjects that make me think. Subjects that make other people think. For example in Portraiture, I usually have the model doing some kind of action but have their eyes locked on the camera. I want people to discuss topics in my photos that are normally taboo. I feel like there isn’t enough of that.

Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
I myself am going through financial challenges as an artist. I take my work home with me and sometimes fail to do anything creative for a couple weeks and let me tell you it’s those weeks that kill me! But you know you can’t give up. You got to keep working hard in order to do what you love. It will pay off. Even if you don’t have the energy, do one small creative thing for yourself. It will make you grow.

Also, there is no shame in getting some part-time job and doing your creative work part-time. There’s a reason that’s so popular. It’s something I have definitely considered. If you’re one of those people that needs a job you won’t take home with you, do it!

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
As with almost everyone these days, you can find my work on Instagram. I also have a website that contains my most striking photos.
