Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique Guzmán .
Monique, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I believe that art should be in everything you do. The way you live, work, love, eat, travel, & dress. Do everything with passion. Simple, quality, and craftsmanship. If you are going to do something, do it right, or there’s the door.
I am a lover of life, music, dance, style, cuisine, cultures, history, literature, nature, and a good glass of wine.
A Renaissance woman: an artist, designer, writer, producer, visionary, contributing stylist, consultant, dancer, humanitarian, food designer, earth lover, and imaginist.
I have mastered both the artistic side of the brain and the logical business mindset with a unique combined effort. Something I have found does not commonly exist.
I must create.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a daughter of immigrants, a Mexican Chilean fashion designer where I combine my Latin flair and west coast vibe in my label Siren Skirts. Based in San Diego, California, I embrace the female form and gives it a voice of power and beauty. My designs are versatile and perfect for travel. They can go anywhere. Established in 2008, my label is a zero waste brand, one of a kind, and each is named like a painting thus becoming a work of art. I want to share my philosophy of the uniqueness of every person, the fragility of the earth, and bringing back handmade, slow fashion, artisan work. The idea that there is only one you, only one world, only one Siren Skirts. #onlyoneexists
I am the Protector of women, children, & the earth. I am the Traveler of people, lands, culture, art, & history. Lastly, I am the Dancer, a passion of rhythm, movement, & sound.
Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
Business wise, need lots of Money, Money, Money… never enough. Seek mentors, although hard to find. Look for mentors outside your arena. It might be a different product, but the fundamentals are the same. Usually, people are tight-lipped and are not eager to exchange how they did it, very secretive, especially if you seek the same industry mentor. Seek older, retired folks that live comfortably.
Artistic wise, follow your gut. Don’t second guess yourself. If you get forward, remember you got there by being you. So be you! Be true to yourself!! and if they don’t like it, who cares. Walk away… Bye Felicia! You got other fish to fry.
