Art & Life with Nick Vogel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Vogel.

Nick, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I am 29 years old and I was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. I was the typical 90’s kid with skating, biking with friends and I grew up around nature and loved going out catching animals like snakes, lizards, and whatever I could get my hands on! I wanted to travel the world to be the next Steve Irwin. As I got older, I got more into computers, gaming, and especially photography. That started to capture my attention with National Geographic and the process of showing wildlife and nature through photography. In 2008 I borrowed my parents’ Nikon Coolpix point & shoot camera and started looking for anything that caught my eye.

A year later I got my first Canon DSLR camera and that’s when I found out what I wanted to pursue. I used that camera to take landscapes and wildlife photos. In 2014 I moved out to sunny San Diego. I visited here every year since I was little because I have relatives that live in La Mesa. Ever since I was young I knew this is where I wanted to be when I was able to move out. San Diego felt right for me. A few years out here I hit my limit with my old Canon and moved onto a higher end camera where I found a new love for portrait photography. Expanding my skill set even more and pushing myself to learn more! San Diego has been an incredible place for photography and grow myself as a person!

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I work as a camera expert at Best Buy and slowly trying to build my own name in the world of Photography. I do primarily portrait photography these days, but that doesn’t hold me back from finding interesting shots in scenery or even a bird here and there! I want to be experienced in all kinds of shooting. I love seeing the world through my camera. It helps me find every small detail in everything. Compositions I would have never noticed if I never got into it. Helps me see the beauty in everything. It expands my imagination and creativity the moment I pick up the camera. My message or inspiration to everyone that wants to pursue photography is to always keep shooting! The more you shoot, the more you learn! And have fun doing it!

In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
In the photography world it’s competition, but all you need to show is creativity and uniqueness. People will find you and love your work for your own style. Take a lot of time and thousands and thousands of photos to grow. Just keep at it!! It’s a saturated area these days with everyone having access to taking high quality photos. It’s all about being YOU and standing out.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I don’t have my website set up yet, but I have my photography Instagram that I am very active on with my latest shoots.
IG: @vogelphotos. And for support, share my IG around to anyone in the SD area interested in doing a shoot!
