Check Out Bri Schillings’ Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bri Schillings.

Hi Bri, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Music is my first language, It connects and conveys the feelings I cannot express through words alone… it has been my greatest form of communication. As a child, I was drawn to music early on, feeling the connectivity and energy between the frequency of nature through sound vibrations. Following this magnetic pull, I could hear a song and already know how to pick out the melody on instruments I’d never played before. I remember feeling that awe and magic, as if I had unlocked a secret door into a world where I felt safe, understood, beautiful, inspired, and where I learned what love is. I continued to explore myself through all the instruments I could and found each instrument had its own unique voice, its own song, and they wanted me to play along. I love sitting down with music and saying” Let’s go on an adventure” and let my heart, hands and voice flow. I feel music has the power to heal. The freedom I discovered when I began to sing and write songs not only became an outlet for the most challenging times in my life, it was my best friend, when there was no one else to turn to. Music held me, inspired me, healed me, loved me and taught me how to love myself. We are Music, each with our own unique inner melody. As we grow and form our Identity in life, we learn to express our inner heart song through a plethora of learned and labeled mediums.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh the many sticks and stones that have shaped my bones and tones. Struggles are my greatest teachers. When I am confronted with an obstacle, I pause and remind myself that this is an opportunity for growth. It’s not easy to be uncomfortable, but change is uncomfortable and change is growth. I learned early on that every “no” is closer to a “yes”, yet not every “yes” is the right fit. The more honest I am with myself and my desires while allowing myself to be confused or uncertain about what I want rather than forcing or being hard on myself for not knowing, the more I become an observer, an explorer, an excited designer of this ever-changing “Bri” prototype. I am grateful for the challenges, for they have given me the character, voice, and moxie expressed through my music today. Many of my songs come from a place of hope and encouragement, little melodic vitamins to boost your immune system when feeling down. Also known as, “Sound Babies”. My advice to all of you, creative BEings, just starting out, doubting yourself, or fully inspired, Follow your heART! Remember, we are creation, just being alive, we are living ART. When you create, you liberate. Creativity can make the impossible, possible.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Music, for choosing me to collaborate with and bring life, healing and love to this crazy beautiful blueberry, spinning around in space. The love of my life and all-time best co-writing / adventure partner I could have ever imagined, Brandon Sudweeks, AKA, my B. Thank you for bringing me back to life! Jamie Shadowlight, angel, magic, soul sister, Violinist and spirit throughout this EP, ME is better with WE. She danced into my life off of a Facebook ad for a violinist I put out back in June and the moment we played together, it was clear we shared the same voice. Diane Maler, my inspiration, artistic director and rock, She has been with me from the days of open Mics in Del Mar at Zels. She would be at every show I had, and bring friends, Doterra breath drops and made sure I was always adorned with a little extra funky flare.

Tim Wray for introducing me to Diane and always making me feel so welcome at Zels. Scott McDowell, for always having my back and being willing to jump up and play guitar lead for all my early shows. Thank you for believing in me. Bart Mendoza-San Diego music scene’s guru and all around wonderful human. Thank you taking a chance on me, for all the music trivia, artistic advice, and long walks in Balboa park. You are a gem! Christoffer Hoffee-Chaos recorders – producer, photographer, artist, and human extraordinaire! Thank you for continually capturing the heart of my music, keeping me grounded, lifting my spirit with funky vinyl and a boogie, if I start to slip into self-deprecation and doubt, and for always inspiring the true meaning of what it means to have a relationship with music.
