Today we’d like to introduce you to Jean Marshall.
Jean, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist. I’m a former international print and runway fashion model; I have lived in Milan, Miami, Tokyo, Paris, Vienna, Athens and Los Angeles. I’ve have worked for top photographers and fashion designers. During my modeling career, it was never a dream to pursue a career in photography, at the time it was only a travel hobby. During my travels, I always had a camera by my side to document the people I met, the places I’ve been and the life I had the good fortune to live as a model.
Who knew that through my camera lens that later in life it would transition into a full time career in photography? When I got back to the states I started to take photos as an art form instead of just for documentary purposes. This eventually led me to regularly photographing models and fashion editorial. Which than led me to photographing for business advertising, weddings, family portraits, events, real estate and individuals all over Southern California and Las Vegas.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Art has healing powers and I consider capturing images of nature a spiritual experience. Not only do I use my camera for commercial purposes, I also use my passion for photography as a way to refuel my soul. When I am not engaged in a photo commission, you will find me somewhere in the midst of nature often capturing a sunrise or a sunset.
Photographing nature as an art form is actually how I got my start as a commercial photographer. Not from modeling, but from photography as a hobby. Modeling gave me the tools I need to teach my clients how to pose in front of my camera and fashion gave me an understanding of composition and what looks good. But truth be told, it was my obsession with photographing nature that taught me how to use my camera. Not to mention I read the instruction book that came with my camera and read a few blogs to learn a few techniques. So, I guess you can say I am self-taught. Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
My focus is to see the positive in life. There is so much happening in the world today, but I have a choice in how I choose to perceive it and how I want to add to it. When I am photographing people, I do so out of a place of love and I choose only to see the beauty in the people in front of me. I don’t focus on negativity in the world around me, because as a visual person if that’s what I focus on that’s all I will see.
As for roles changing and events affecting me, I have no answer or opinion on these topics because I work on myself all the time to try to be the best human being I can be. But it’s not like I look at the world through rose-colored lenses, I just stay focused on the positive. (Pun intended.)
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
