Check out Kari McKinney’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kari McKinney.

Kari, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania, obsessed with playing Yahtzee with my grandmother and patiently waiting for her to whip out her 110 camera. My childhood came to an abrupt stop at about 12 when I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. I spent the next ten years, or so, dealing with the worst of what that autoimmune disease can bring to life. Through all of that, the only thing I was certain of is that I wanted to move far away and that photography was the only consistent thing to bring me joy. Eventually, through all the trials and tribulations of life with chronic illnesses, I landed myself in California. I spent some time at Brooks Institute of Photography and floated a bit between what I thought was the right path for my career. Photography and I had an on and off relationship for several years through hip replacements, gut surgeries, life changes, and relocations. There were times I feared we wouldn’t find our way back to each other. One thing never changed; photography consistently brought me joy! So I am happy to now find myself in San Diego county raising my beautiful daughter, managing life with chronic illnesses, and continuing to fulfill my dream of being a photographer.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
When I tell people, I am a photographer the next question I get is about what I specialize in, and I never quite have an answer for them. I have not found a photography I do not enjoy. I can say I do primarily do portraiture; family, newborn, maternity, senior portraits, birth, wedding, and anything in between! I also love travel and adventure, so nature, landscape, and events are equally prioritized in my life.

As a photographer, I am here to capture moments and memories for anyone and everyone. Maybe its an art piece for your wall, or your business, or even an advertisement. I just want my art to give a smile to someone’s face, or give them a look back. Whether it is a family portrait, a building, or landscape. Photography is a way to freeze our ever-changing lives, and it allows us to take a moment of appreciation for things we may otherwise take for granted.

Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
For my particular medium, technology has been a massive game changer. Some for the good and some for the bad. Anyone in my field understands that tenfold. Social media has changed us from a print and album world to an upload world. A completely naked and exposed world from local to international. Again, this includes the good and the bad. Photography is a large part of that because someone is out there documenting all events and sharing it around the globe. You can look at one con; it devalues each image when there are tons of people at the same event doing the same thing. The upside is art looks a little differently through each individual artist. As I said before, personally, what I am looking for is to bring a smile to someone, something to look back on, and/or give appreciation to things that may otherwise be taken for granted. In a way, I guess we can say we dip into the world of being a reporter!

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I currently have two social media platforms that anyone can see my work and personally request prints on eligible images. On Facebook I am @kmcphotograph, and on Instagram I am @kmc_photo_.

On the website www.society6.com, you can search Kari McKinney to find my images that you can have printed on a number of items such as coffee mugs, cosmetic bags, and tapestry.

I am currently putting together a website, so be sure to follow me on social media to catch the date it goes live!
