Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Canales.
Mike, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My story began at a wedding… eager to learn and wanting to shoot more and get the best end image for my clients. I found myself spilling over in conversation with my girlfriend at the time, that Id love to ask the wedding photographer if he was open to training. Being nervous and before I learned the saying, ‘You have to risk it for the biscuit,’ I was hesitant to approach. An opportunity arose to speak with him, and my hesitation received a literal push from my girlfriend to go speak with the photographer. The story doesn’t end there but opened up into a whole new world of portrait taking. Oh and if your wondering, the photographer graciously mentored me, the first of many.
Each time I photograph a subject, I look back on the iconic day I spoke with the photographer and how getting out of my own way lead me to truly changing lives and doing what I love.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Hybrid Portrait Photography is my game, which incorporates modern and contemporary looks.
It brings a wonderful sense of accomplishment to allow my subject to see how truly beautiful they are.
With negativity abundant and positivity scarce at times, shining light into one’s heart is rewarding not only for me but my subject as well.
The images I try to form and create are timeless in nature. They encompass elements to include a connection with the subject, which truly gives a portrait an amazing look no other type of photography brings to the viewer.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
Simple, success is doing what you love and making a living doing it. Once you stop loving what you do, it’s a good time to reflect on why you loved it to begin with. It all starts and ends with your WHY. Never give up; keep failing…
“The most successful people in life are the biggest failures.”
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
