Check Out Alex Andersen’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Andersen.

Hi Alex, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved to San Diego in 2013 to attend SDSU business school. I always knew I wanted to start my own business I just wasn’t sure what. I remember one of my business professors said, “If you’re going to start a business make sure it’s something you’re passionate about.” At that time, I wasn’t sure what that really meant… now I get it!

My last job in Hollister, CA prior to making my way to San Diego I was an Executive Assistant at none other than the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club. Funny enough, I had zero interest in golf, I mean zero, at the time.

Fast forward to 2015. I was getting ready to graduate from San Diego State University and *sigh* I met a boy. On our first trip home to Hollister, there was nothing to do to entertain him (farm town) so we made our way to my old Country Club.

This is where my passion for golf started. The moment my driver struck the ball off the tee, I was hooked!

Though the relationship faded, my love of the game only continued to grow. I played golf consistently and just wanted to meet other women who played golf. I started meetups at mission bay golf course and each week, our group grew larger. I quickly realized that there was a lot of women who really wanted to learn to golf but there wasn’t a non-intimidating place for us. I wanted to create a space for women to feel welcomed and have an opportunity to learn the game!

This is when I started to gather my babes. I encouraged any friends I could to join me on the course, to introduce them to the game and to my passion.

I’m so happy that this passion has turned into something that truly brings women together in something that, let’s face it, can be a difficult game in a male-dominated sport. Our women are here to encourage others, we challenge one another but at the end of the day, no one cares what the score was, we are just there to have fun and meet new golf friends.

Babes Golf is now an official club of the SCGA. As of now, we have four meetups a month all over San Diego. We are partnered with local golf instructors, businesses, even callaway golf for Babe perks & discounts. We do fun events, including yoga & golf, golf clinics, nine and wine, charity golf tournaments, mini-golf outings, indoor golf stimulators, beach days, golf trips, etc. my vision is to expand beyond San Diego to offer women all over the opportunity to enjoy this amazing game!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As many know, starting a business, you learn a lot. More than school can prepare you for. Although I have my business background, I still struggled getting started. While working full time and planning events for Babes Golf, it was difficult to do it all. I also struggled with monetizing the business. Fast forward to 2020, I met a lady golfing and she was the President of her golf club. She has been a huge mentor for me and helped me form my club. In 2020 things really turned up! During COVID, there wasn’t much we could do but GOLF! The golf industry saw a huge interest in women wanting to golf! This is when Southern California Golf Association reached out to me and wanted to start marketing my club and help me grow the game. They have been a huge part of my success in reaching women all over Southern CA.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love encouraging women to try golf. To step out of their comfort zone! No one ever regrets it. I’m so proud to see so many women golfing together, meeting new friends and especially love seeing all the relationships that have come from this. I love scrolling through my social media and seeing the girls golfing together, grabbing happy hour, going to our golf coaches, and supporting the local businesses all around us.

How do you define success?
Success is happiness. If you’re happy doing things you love, that’s success!

Happiness to me is helping others, connecting people, creating fun for everyone around me, and seeing others happy.
