Today we’d like to introduce you to Feras Maidaa.
Feras, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As a seasoned trainer and competitive biker with a background in nutrition, I realized there was nothing on the market to fuel an all-natural product to maximize performance. Because I always wanted to add value to my community through an all-natural product, San Diego Bar has been born out of the passion of supporting performance and encouraging an active lifestyle which beautiful San Diego facilitates. Striving to cover all the properties of the ultimate nutrition bar, all of San Diego Bars are raw, vegan, gluten-free, with 10 g of protein through nothing but whole unprocessed ingredients – making it a bar with the best taste, texture and nutritional profile that you can’t find anywhere else!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As San Diego Bar started in April 2019, we were hit hard like many businesses by COVID. As a food product company our awareness largely depended on product sampling which was unfortunately shut down throughout this past year navigating the pandemic. On a positive though, we maintained our online marketing channels and are grateful for the strong word of mouth support which kept our sales running and our spirits hopeful.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Coming to UC Santa Barbara for College as a Syrian native was a transformational experience in needing to learn English and assimilate to American culture. In college, I studied physiology with an emphasis on exercise and nutrition. After college, I am grateful to have gone on to build a career as a personal trainer which has allowed me to help many people.
In regards to San Diego Bar, I am most proud of the company’s emphasis on social responsibility and its ability to give back to our local refugee company. As an immigrant turned American citizen, I like many people came to this country for the ‘American Dream.’ Over the years volunteering within this community, I found a need in helping give back to refugees that are struggling to find job opportunities. By housing our own manufacturing facility, we are proud that a large portion of our operation staff is hired out of San Diego’s own refugee community.
SD Bars also gives back to livebiglove.com that supports students and education in homes in Syria.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
SCORE San Diego has been a great resource from the start of our company. Very grateful for the many educational materials they have provided in helping run all avenues of a business from accounting, sales, operations, marketing, etc.
