Check Out Genevieve Williamson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Genevieve Williamson.

Hi Genevieve, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
How a data analyst became a body sculptor…

For the last almost 10 years I worked as a data analyst for a consulting firm, consulting on solutions to reduce homelessness. I was working on my master’s in Industrial/Organizational Psychology when I found my previous employer had a position open for someone with knowledge of a statistical software that I had been using for years; it became the perfect fit. I loved that job! I have always been passionate about reducing suffering for others and doing something that felt important to me, and I am a total data geek that loves research and analytics. I had found the perfect job. I had no plans on ever leaving this job. Then, COVID – maybe you’ve heard of it, hahaha – changed the world. So much changed for all of us. Not only did my job change, but my needs changed too. My work wasn’t fulfilling me like it once did, I wasn’t doing the work with my whole self anymore, it wasn’t genuine. I knew I needed to make a career change, and get back to being connected and authentic in/at my work, but to what? After 10 years in the same job, in a really niche field, what was I going to do?

Around this time, I had non-invasive body sculpting done to my stomach and butt by a friend. As a lover of all things beauty-related, and as a woman constantly battling with the insecurities of my body and aging, I was in love! I couldn’t believe that I actually saw results with no pain and a relatively low cost. I knew I’d be adding body sculpting to the long list of regular maintenance.

As I started thinking about what my new career could be I thought of body sculpting. I was so happy with it and thought I would really enjoy sharing that with other people. I could work with people, which I love. To get started I’d need to do lots of research and learning, which I also love. Really seemed like a great idea.

So, step 1, learn everything about body sculpting; no problem. I’m great at learning but then what? What about the actual doing of the work? Do I work for someone else? Do I have a partner? Where do I do it? This was unchartered territory for me. With the help of my incredibly supportive, entrepreneurial-minded partner, I decided I’d be on my own. I was going to do the one thing I never thought I would do, run my own business.

I spent MONTHS learning everything I could. I analyzed and researched all I could about this emerging field. (I’m the kind of person who has to know everything there is to know about a topic before I begin. Some people are more comfortable diving in and learning as they go, not me. I’m way too type A and high-strung for that, hahaha.) I needed the perfect space before I saw any paying clients. I wanted to create an environment that feels professional, comfortable, and peaceful without being pretentious. It took me about 6 months of in-depth learning, multiple certifications from different experts, practice on friends, location searching, and a newfound dedication to interior design before I finally saw my first client August 30th, 2021, in my beautiful spot-on Coronado.

Nearly one year later, and I’m doing it! My space is incredible, I love how I feel when I’m there and I think my clients do too. I’m so fulfilled spending time with clients and watching them feel better about their bodies with these incredible, pain-free treatments. Bringing in clientele is still my biggest struggle but it IS happening. My business-owning friends constantly remind me that it takes time and to be proud of how far I have come. I couldn’t be more proud, AND I’m not a patient person so the waiting is hard!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This has been one of, if not the single, hardest thing I have ever done in my life.

First, I quit my job of nearly 10 years…a job I never thought I would leave where I liked the work I did, with good money and full benefits. I can’t tell you how many days I cried and thought, “what have you done?!?! You had it so great. Who do you think you are trying to start your own business? You can’t do this. You have made a HUGE mistake.” I’m so lucky to have a supportive partner, who also runs his own business, to hold my hand along the way. There were so many days I felt totally broken; it was such a scary process. I knew that there was potential for a reward that far exceeded the struggle but honestly wasn’t sure I’d ever make it that far.

Learning about body sculpting was fun and easy. I’ve always loved science and the human body so I was thoroughly enjoying diving into this area. Learning about the ins and outs of running a business, whether to be an LLC or S-Corp, how to protect myself legally, finding and setting up office space…not so exciting. I was constantly surprised by how little I knew. I didn’t even know enough to know what questions to ask. Then there is getting clientele, OMG! I have never had to bring in my own clients. I don’t know anything about marketing or advertising and I had no idea where to begin.

I wouldn’t say the struggle is totally over. I’m still building my client base to feel like I have a steady, reliable income; however, at this point, I actually believe it’s possible to get there. Six months ago, I really didn’t know. I also know now this was the best decision I could’ve made. I have never been happier to go to work. I can’t tell you how much I love treating my clients. I seriously love every one of my clients, BodyRefined brings in the coolest people! Every time I start to feel like this is too good to be true – loving what I do with such amazing clients – I remember how hard I worked for this. I believe the universe gives back what you put out – I give 100% of my entire, authentic self to every person that contacts me, and in return, I get to do a job a love and meet amazing people.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I do non-invasive body sculpting…

Body sculpting/contouring refers to a wide range of surgical and non-surgical procedures intended to help people get rid of unwanted body fat to reshape, redefine, tighten, and/or tone the body. BodyRefined offers non-invasive treatments to reduce targeted areas of fat, tighten the skin, and contour the body to help you meet your individual goals. FDA-cleared non-invasive/non-surgical body sculpting treatments are a favorable alternative to surgical treatments because they do not carry the same risks such as infection or scarring and require no recovery time. These procedures are lower in cost and come with minimal and less severe potential side effects.

Even with a healthy diet and regular exercise, you can’t target fat loss; that’s one of the ways my treatments help; To get those stubborn areas of fat that are hanging on. I specialize in targeted fat loss and skin tightening, cellulite reduction, and booty plump and lifts. I’m the only practitioner within 75 miles who offers Liquid Lipo Ltd products created and researched in the U.K.

When I started this business, I knew I had a lot of competition. Non-Invasive body sculpting has blown up! The specific modalities I use require certification not licensure and can be done outside of a MedSpa, making this a more accessible industry for practitioners to enter into. I knew I would need to be different, but how? Well, at the end of the day, what sets me apart is ME. I rely on who I am and the relationships I build with my clients to set me apart. In addition, I feel my analytical and research-focused nature ensures I’m well educated and knowledgeable about what I do. I’ve worked hard to create a warm, comfortable environment for my clients to receive treatment. I’m the only body sculptor in Coronado and although it might be a bit of drive for my clients who don’t live on the island what a beautiful drive it is. You come over that bridge and instantly feel like you are on vacation and I work to keep that energy going at BodyRefined. It’s a place for clients to take some time for themselves. The fact that my core business has become return clients that continue to purchase treatment packages tells me that they love not only the results but the entire experience. I’m so proud of the relationships I have built with clients and the space I offer them, a judgment-free space to relax and take care of yourself. We all those areas of insecurity on our bodies, and I believe I’ve created a body-positive environment so my clients can leave feeling better than when they came in.

Any big plans?
I’ll continue to learn and research, so I’m always bringing the best to my clients. Other than growing my clientele, I don’t have any big changes in mind, just keep and build on this momentum! Keep loving my current clients, get new clients, and introduce the area to Liquid Lipo products so they can purchase for at-home use. I hope to be so busy my back hurts, and I struggle to keep Liquid Lipo products stocked.
