Check Out Jared Lazar’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jared Lazar.

Hi Jared, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m very lucky to have a creative mother that was constantly creating in a multitude of mediums. She encouraged creativity in myself and my siblings. I took to re-creating comics at an early age. In my late teens, I used discarded (and often broken) surfboards and skateboards as my canvas. I never thought pursuing my art professionally was worthwhile. Fast forward to 2011, my group of friends encouraged me to push my craft in a commercial sense. 2014 I started recreating my art digitally and accepted a partnership as partner and Creative Director at Team Phun. I now live a life of constant creation: digital art by day and analog art by nights and weekends, doing commissioned paintings and boasting seven murals around Pacific Beach.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s not been an easy road by any means. I’ve made a lot of mistakes along the way, specifically with undervaluing my time.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m most known for painting Sirens and Sea Creatures with tons of bright colors, patterns and clean line work. The ocean is vastly unknown and the mythology that surrounds it inspires me. I’ve loved the story of sirens: the idea that these beautiful monsters with gorgeous voices lured sailors to their death. It’s a little grim, but I love exploring that darkness in beauty.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
One of my art mentors instructed me early on to introduce myself as an artist; lead with that, and even if it’s awkward for you, keep saying it until you believe it as well.
