Check Out Judith Sobel’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Judith Sobel.

Hi Judith, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
The Sanctuary was founded by Sunny Benedict, a native New Yorker who worked in Real Estate in Rosarito. From her office window, Sunny would see local animals, mangy and starving roaming the streets in search of anyone who might toss them a morsel of food or give them a kind pat on the head. She knew she had to do something. With only $180.00 she gathered from friends, she turned her dream into reality and started The Baja Animal Sanctuary. I started volunteering in 2003 and along with Sunny and her husband Jaime, we created the program as it is to date.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The struggles are and will always be financial. We are not supported by the local government and we rely on donations and adoption fees. We have vaccines, sterilizations, medical and of course food costs daily.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am the Program Director for the Sanctuary….I receive/review the applications and schedule the meet and greets, I edit/produce the newsletter and administer some of the social media pages. Don’t get me wrong…this is in no way a one-man show, we have Jaime Victorio, our President, the BAS staff and the most amazing group of volunteers and I would not be able to do this without them.

How do you define success?
Success to me is finding our dogs the best homes possible. When we get photos of adopted dogs in soft cozy beds or on a trip with the family…that’s success!

  • Adoption fee is $275. Dogs are current on vaccines, sterilized, flea/tick treated and de-wormed
