Check Out Kristina Joy’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristina Joy.

Hi Kristina, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My passion for photography stems from my love of creating and documenting memories. I remember the day I was adopted from Russia at the age of seven. I had one printed photo of my dearest friend and I. I was so determined to keep that photo forever because I feared forgetting her and the orphanage, where I lived for a few of my early years. During my childhood, I happened to move quite a bit, which further instilled the importance of documenting my friends, family and experiences. In middle school, I picked up my first film camera and absolutely fell in love.

In high school, I got my first canon digital camera for Christmas. I took that thing everywhere. It wasn’t until I had my oldest daughter that I decided to buy my first DSLR. I bought it primarily to take photos of her. She was and still is the perfect little model. I began sharing my pictures of her on social media and friends began asking me to take photos of them with their children! I still remember my first paid session. I was so nervous but as soon as I looked through the viewfinder, all I focused on was capturing the beautiful moments between the mother and daughter. The connection and emotion. It all felt so natural! I continued to photograph families while working full time, daydreaming of the day I would be able to be a photographer full time. Six years later, here I am! I work for an event company as a wedding photographer and manager of the photography department. In addition, I have my own small business where I photograph families, elopements, couples and so much more! I’m truly blessed to be doing something I’m incredibly passionate about while supporting my family!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wouldn’t say it’s been entirely smooth. I dedicated myself to learn all things photography, marketing, business, and so much more. Staying up late doing online classes, watching tutorials, practicing editing, etc, all while raising children, being a wife, attending community college and working full time at a regular 9-5 job. I’ve had to sacrifice quite a bit to stay on track. Sometimes I’ve considered giving up. There is so much competition out there and it’s easy to let that get to your head. But, in those moments of weakness, I’ve redirected myself and kept pushing through. Despite it being challenging, I’m starting to feel like it’s paying off. After all, I’m doing what I LOVE for my “job.” I can’t wait to see what I accomplish in another five years.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I photograph people and the special moments or events in their life.

I am most proud of my “glow up” over the past couple of years. I can see that the time I’ve spent educating myself, practicing, etc. has improved the quality of my work. No matter what, I will continue to educate myself, challenge my creativity and keep practicing. I think what sets me apart from others is how quickly I build friendships with my clients. Being my outgoing self has helped create a fun, relaxed experience, which allows my clients to feel more comfortable with me.. and that is so important to me!

How do you think about happiness?
A lot makes me happy! First and foremost, my girls make me happy! Coffee too. (LOL!) On a serious note, the reaction I get from my clients when they see their photos truly lights my soul on fire!
