Check Out Mary Le-Maldonado’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Le-Maldonado.

Hi Mary, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I attended school and became licensed as a Master Esthetician in Washington after the fast-paced and cutthroat environment of the tech industry left me yearning for something more rewarding. My husband is an active-duty Navy submariner and received orders to San Diego, forcing us to uproot our lives and start over in the sunshine state. 2020 was a difficult year, as our move occurring right as COVID-19 swept the country and made the entire endeavor very stressful. On top of that, my industry was particularly crippled by the pandemic and made finding work difficult.

My husband and I would spend our nights dreaming of opening our own business as I worked odd jobs here and there in San Diego. We were still in the dream stages when a local business popped up for sale in a good location at a price we could afford. Instead of letting fear defeat us with inaction, we decided to take a huge leap of faith and go for it. Everything about Balboa Oasis Spa was built with our own hands and the help of some friends and family. It was a true team effort to get it up and running in July of 2021, and so far has been an extremely rewarding experience.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. As first time business owners, we made some mistakes along the way. We weren’t sure how busy we would be from the get-go and made some poor manning decisions at first. I think we underestimated the impact COVID-19 would have on our business, originally assuming people were ready and willing to get back to practicing self-care with facials and massages. Unfortunately, there’s still a lot of uneasiness regarding the pandemic and people are hesitant to engage in our industry. Balancing work/life has also been an ongoing challenge, as it has been difficult at times to not spend every waking moment at the spa, neglecting relationships with friends and family. One of the greatest blessings about all of this is having my husband help out on the weekends, which has done a lot toward allowing us to still spend time with each other.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a licensed Master Esthetician. I specialize in skincare and relaxation, while my lead massage therapist, Sarah, is highly skilled in many forms of massage. What sets Balboa Oasis Spa apart from everywhere else is easily our dedication to making your visit an experience. Many spa businesses simply have you come in, get your service, then pay and leave. We strive to break that mold and treat every client like a true VIP, doing our best to get to know them as they spend their day with us and offering snacks/beverages after their visit. Our famous freshly-squeezed grapefruit water post-service is a hit, and serves as a good way to get clients to slow down and savor the moment. Our goal is to make sure everyone, regardless of their mood when they came in, leaves with a relaxed smile on their face. So far, we’ve met our goal!

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I am a big believer in always continuing to learn and get better! I can’t say there’s any specific book or resource that has helped considerably, but I am constantly on the prowl for literature that will teach me new techniques, or simply refine the ones I already know. As far as personal life goes, Club Pilates just down the street from our location has been a godsend. I tried it out a few months ago just out of curiosity and was instantly hooked; it has served as a great way to relieve stress and improve my fitness without having to sacrifice much time away from work.
