Check Out Rachel Vargo’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Vargo.

Hi Rachel, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I come from a family of creatives who have that innovative, entrepreneurial spirit and Our Creative Hands is my version of me. My parents were my inspiration. My journey started in 1980 and has never left my heart and soul.

I have dabbled in crafts of all sorts-Knitting, crocheting, quilt making and all types of sewing, My latest and now most fulfilling is wood creations. Not only signs but anything created from wood. Custom request orders are always welcome.

I could not do this alone. My husband is definitely my inspiration and my biggest fan. He has always been my encouragement to move forward.

Along with creating, I love to give back and share my knowledge of all I’ve learned. I love to support other makers in any way I can and because of that, I definitely can see how I and my business have been blessed.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all smooth – I used to be a wholesaler to many craft stores along with all the Longs Drug stores in the early 1980s. Our items were in 2 major stores in Julian, California including every year I would receive a large wholesale order for the Octoberfest located in La Mesa, Ca.

Things began changing the market was not wanting the hand-crafted items any longer. Overseas makers were offering for a lesser price than I could. The orders were no longer coming in. I would not give up I began creating for individuals who needed help to put in their stores. (Small establishments)

I did many special orders for family and friends -never did I stop painting or sewing. Eventually, the world wanted handmade creations again.

I started selling on Etsy then creating my website along with Facebook and Instagram.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I worked for a Home Based Company for over 22 years. I was able to use all my customer relations skills available to me. I helped many find the answers they could not find on their own. Customer Service goes hand in hand with my passion to craft.

My patience is what I specialize in. This is what I am known for. I was that person on the other side of the telephone helping you find a Place for your parent, spouse, sibling or friend. I helped and guided you to the correct areas making sure you were taken care of. And if I could not do it myself I reached out to any organization to make sure you were on the right path.

I no longer work for this company as of last year although it’s not possible to return due to a California law I loved what I did and would go back in a moment.

What sets me apart from others is I believe my Heart and Soul are filled with compassion for everyone. And with this, I create with true joy. When I see someone smile as they purchase my product I feel blessed.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Be Fair always. Treat other crafters with respect, share your knowledge if possible and ask for help. I learned that creative people (crafters) are the nicest people I could meet. How to price products is still my biggest challenge I am learning. You can not judge prices with time you spent creating so make sure you Love what you are doing…
