Today we’d like to introduce you to Raul Padilla.
Raul, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
California Mountain Bakery is a small family-owned and operated bakery in Julian. Our family has lived in Julian most of our lives and so we grew up around apple pie. My father Raul Padilla has been baking pies in Julian for almost 30 years. Our family has always been involved with food my mother is an amazing cook and I started working in local restaurants when I was 15. Shortly after graduating high school, I attended culinary school in San Diego and it was around the same time that we decided to give opening our very own bakery a shot. Using the knowledge, I was acquiring from my culinary school and my father’s experience and families support, we successfully opened California Mountain Bakery in 2014. Our goal was to open a small family-run operation that specialized in all sorts of classic pies and baked goods. Since then, we have continued to grow and offer our pies not only in Julian but in many retailers across San Diego County. As a family, we’ve always put quality above all when it comes to anything we bake in our store and we have slowly become Julian’s best-kept secret amongst our many growing supporters and followers across the county and state. Today we are happy people who come and visit our small bakery amongst Julian’s famous apple orchards and try a slice of our delicious pie, and we are now considered one of Julian’s favorites!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
As with any business, there are many struggles along the way. Starting a bakery in an already established pie town was a challenge all in itself. It was our hope and goal to slowly stand out amongst the many famous bakeries in Julian and show everyone that we also offer a delicious pie! Slowly but surely our first customers started stopping by and the work and quality our family puts into everyone one of our pies began to show. As with any first-time business owner, it was tough to know exactly how we could grow our business and clientele. Thankfully we have had an amazing response from all our customers and supporters and through the years thanks to the word have slowly spread and brought us to where we are today. As many customers have told us the pie speaks for itself!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My whole family has always loved food and we’ve always had a passion for cooking. My father has been baking since I was born. My mother is the best cook in the family and always showed us what a delicious home-cooked meal could be. As for myself I started working in the restaurant industry at the age of fifteen and graduated from culinary school in San Diego. But what sets our business apart the most is not our own combined experience but that our whole family is involved in our bakery and we are there for every step of the pie-making process until it leaves our bakery and arrives at your home!
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc.?
Our family always loves watching cooking shows when we are together! My father loves watching traveling shows where people visit other restaurants and bakeries. Other than that, we love going to the movies it’s probably our favorite thing to do!
