Check Out Shawnda Dorantes’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawnda Dorantes.

Hi Shawnda, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I began my career in the beauty industry in the early 2000s as a professional makeup artist while triple majoring in Women’s Studies, Biological Sciences, and Nursing. I left makeup behind when I became a nurse, focusing on my new career path. I spent the next seven years working in acute care, specializing in Medical Surgical/Telemetry, Orthopedic, Stroke/Neuro, and Palliative Care nursing.

In 2017 I pursued my permanent makeup certification and opened up a small one-room permanent makeup studio, while simultaneously training in medical aesthetics. In late 2018 I officially expanded my service menu launching Beauty Lounge Medical Spa, located in San Marcos. Last year I earned my Master of Nursing Family Nurse Practitioner degree and we opened our brand new state-of-the-art San Marcos location.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Far from smooth. So many struggles. Financial challenges are typical for most businesses just starting out as was the case for me. The aesthetic industry is a very expensive niche to break into as an entrepreneur requiring significant capital. I was very naive when I started out and just dove in without doing my due diligence. I did not have any money saved, loans, or investors and completely self-funded the venture maxing out credit cards and clearing out my 401k propelling me into what seemed like a state of constant stress trying to get my head out of water.

Then came the COVID-19 pandemic after being open for just over a year, we were forced to close our doors for two months. Talk about stress! On a personal level balancing the demands of family, school, and work was probably the hardest. It always seemed if the business was thriving and I was doing well in school one week, my home was falling apart, and I was sucking as a mom. It was basically impossible to be simultaneously successful in all three areas, one area would have to suffer.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner at Beauty Lounge Medical Spa, in San Marcos California. I specialize in NATURAL full facial rejuvenation and balancing utilizing advanced techniques such as; neuromodulators such as Botox or Dysport, fillers, bio-stimulators, PDO threads, and laser skin resurfacing. I’m most known for my liquid rhinoplasties, PDO nose lifts, and lip augmentation procedures. I’ve spent the last four years attending advanced training and conferences by industry leaders throughout the US perfecting my craft and learning advanced techniques. I was voted 2021 and 2022 San Diego’s Favorite Cosmetic Dermatology Individual in the Union Tribune’s Reader’s poll.

I believe what sets me apart from other injectors is the patient experience and the relationship I develop with my patients. If you are looking for continuity in your aesthetic treatments and a highly skilled expert injector then I’m your girl. I’m not going to oversell you and push treatments you don’t need. I’ll be honest and mindful of your budget, designing a treatment plan to address your concerns one visit at a time.
