Today we’d like to introduce you to Ronald McKinley.
Ronald, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I started getting into photography way back in 2007 when I studied Digital Photography in Chicago. I kind of took a break from photography once I moved to Southern California after joining the Navy from 2010-2014. I really got back into photography after serving in the military, and I have been active in all types of genres such as portrait, landscape and automotive photo shoots.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I love all aspects of the creative process that goes into making fun and unique images, and in 2017, I even started making my own wooden picture frames for my photos! I would make my frames into different shapes and sizes, and would then paint them specific colors to match the image. I thought this would be a great way to really make my photography into a work of art, and also because I believe it helps make my work stand out in their own unique way. So far it’s been a blast combining photography, painting and woodworking, and I hope people enjoy my art!
The sterotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
Great question! It’s definitely a challenge working a full-time job that has nothing to do with what I’m interested in, but I use that as fuel to push myself to keep networking by participating in a variety of art shows, making time every day to add to my art before/after work, and just keeping a positive mindset.
