Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam & Lana Gill. Them and their team share their story with us below:
The Gills’ passion for Porsche began as a hobby. An attorney by trade, Adam raced his 1998 Porsche Boxster, affectionately named Cupcake, on the weekends with the Porsche Club of America San Diego Region and wrenched on his Porsche in the evening in his driveway. As a driver, Adam’s performance stood out, and in 2012, he became the youngest Chief Driving Instructor in PCA- SDR’s history. Word quickly spread about Adam’s expertise, and he soon began wrenching on other people’s Porsches at home.
As the saying goes, a friend told a friend, and eventually, Adam had a waiting list three months out, with people bringing Porsches to the house from all over San Diego, Temecula, Orange County, and LA. In 2018, Adam and Lana decided to take the leap of faith and open their premier shop, Völlig Autowerks. In two short years, the shop has become a leading choice for Porsche owners looking for repairs or upgrades. Völlig Autowerks offers a full range of services from basic maintenance and engine tuning to suspension upgrades, racecar builds, and custom fabrication.
The staff at Völlig Autowerks has over 75 years of combined experience and takes great pride in their work. The team goes the extra mile to discern the root of the vehicle’s problem instead of just replacing parts without a true understanding of the mode of failure. It’s this attention to detail and getting to know each car that sets Völlig Autowerks apart from other shops; these values are built into their work delivered and the shop name. “The word ‘völlig’ is loosely translated as precisely or thoroughly, and precision is what Adam and Lana stand behind on every job that comes through the doors,
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
As a startup, with the Grand Opening on April 20, 2019, Völlig Autowerks was not even opened for a full year when California shut down due to the Covid-19 pandemic. When the Shelter-at-Home orders were issued, Völlig experienced the natural downturn that all businesses experienced during that time. However, Völlig was lucky as it was able to stay open due to automotive services falling within the essential business category. Standard maintenance jobs were significantly reduced as people were not out driving. Adam and Lana managed to keep all the employees on payroll full time and struggled to get through a very rough few months. Fortunately, due to the racing side of the house, eventually customers began to call to get projects completed on their cars, and after about 6 months, maintenance began to pick back up again. Völlig was fortunate, unlike so many other businesses amid Covid and the difficulties that many experienced. Now, 2.5 years later, the business is thriving and Lana & Adam are thankful every day for the loyal customers that believe in an independent like Völlig to make their Porsche dreams come true. 🙂

Adam and Lana not only spend the time to get to know each customer, but also, each car that comes through Völlig’s doors. It’s this attention to detail and getting to know each car that sets Völlig Autowerks apart from other shops; these values are built into the work delivered and the shop name. The business started out of Adam & Lana’s home. Customers broke bread with them, threw a football with their kids, and helped build a business they never knew to even dream. When deciding to build Völlig, Lana & Adam wanted to create a shop where people could come and feel like an extended family. Like they were still coming to their home and that anything that came out of the shop was treated with the same care, quality and precision as the moniker implies. The Völlig brand extends to the maintenance, customer fabrication, performance upgrades, race cars, merchandise and custom art pieces designed and hand crafted inside Völlig HQ.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Lana is the mastermind behind the Völlig custom art pieces. In order to balance the rigors of running the back-end of Völlig, Lana sorts through the spare parts that come off the Porsches and breathes new life into them. The artwork is sprinkled through the shop and is also available to customers. Art designs have included bookends, lamps, clocks, tables, tumblers and more. Upcycling has been a surprising creative revenue stream has added a layer to Völlig that was not planned, nor expected when beginning the business.
