Community Highlights: Meet Alex Shearer of Alex G Shearer Health

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Shearer.

Hi Alex, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have loved health and wellness for as long as I can remember. For the last 10+ years I have been continually educating myself, friends, and family on the importance of health and wellness in all areas of life. I always knew I wanted to do something surrounding the field, but I wasn’t sure what. I studied psychology during my undergrad at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and went on to obtain my MA in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine University. While in graduate school I also completed training necessary to become a Certified International Health Coach through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and the International Health Coach Association. I wanted to bridge the gap between physical and mental health as an important step in creating a happier and healthier world. While in school, I started my own practice. After graduating I was able to take it on full time and grow my business to what it is today. I still have a ways to go but every step of the journey has been so important to me and I am beyond grateful for where each step has taken me.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not. There is no direct path for connecting psychology and physical wellness and turning it into a career. I have had to make my own path in that sense, and I’m sure it looks different from someone else who is doing something similar. It took some trial and error to figure out what direction I really wanted to go with this. Growing up, I never thought I would be starting my own business. I have met many challenges that I’m sure any other small business or private practice owners would understand. However, I am so grateful to have a support system of friends and family who have helped guide me along the way.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I have a private coaching practice specializing in physical and mental wellbeing. I work with clients one-on-one to guide them to become their healthiest self, whatever that looks like to them. One of the biggest issues I see today when working with clients is a lack of individuality in health and wellness. I offer various programs that are tailored to the individual. Some areas of expertise include gut health, mindful nutrition and exercise choices, behavior changes toward healthier living, nutrition for mental health, building a healthy relationship with food, maintaining wellness while traveling, and blood sugar & metabolic health. All of these impact our physical and mental wellbeing which allows me to look at the whole person and take a holistic approach. I work with my clients to explore multiple areas of life, such as why some foods make you feel better than others, what exercise routine works for your body and schedule, disordered eating behaviors, how to combat increased stress or anxiety, and what drives you to take care of yourself. We co-create your health goals in a way that is solution-focused, reasonable, and continual.

Aside from working with clients on an individual basis, I have built a strong community on social media where I share daily tips and healthy habits that are realistic and attainable. Health doesn’t have to be complicated and it doesn’t have to be clinical. It can be fun, beautiful, and simple. The community I have built through social has allowed me to explore the more creative parts of owning a business and I appreciate that so much. It also allows me to connect with clients in a different way.

I typically work with clients virtually which allows me to see clients all over the country and the world. However, for clients based in the Southern California area I give them the option to work together in person when/if it is convenient.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Most people probably know this or at least assume but I LOVE to travel. I have visited nearly 60 countries and all seven continents. My family has always prioritized travel and we have been all over the world together. I have a travel section of my website where I share recommendations and am helping my family launch a new travel agency in the next few months – look out for JACA Travel… coming soon! Travel is a big passion of mine and I love incorporating health and wellness into travel whenever I can.
