Community Highlights: Meet Daniella Fratangelo of Avanti Pilates

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniella Fratangelo.

Daniella, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Ten years ago: 2021 marks Avanti Pilates’ ten year anniversary! I fell in love with Pilates right away because it was challenging and made me think differently about my day to day movement. I wanted to prove to myself I was capable of performing every Pilates exercise and perform them well. Pilates is definitely a process–I am still learning new things about each Pilates exercise to this day. I started teaching Pilates in Las Vegas after graduating as a Dance Major from UNLV in 2007. In 2011, I wanted to start crafting my own Pilates philosophy and start a business here in my hometown of San Diego. I came up with the name Avanti to honor my Italian heritage and to always keep its meaning in mind: progress. Progress for me, progress for my business, and progress especially for my clients. Over the last ten years, I’ve taken courses and courses–my brain has been like a sponge. I’ve taught for Cirque du Soleil, retirement homes, professional athletes, kids, and everyone in between. I love to help people and when a client and I see progress, it is one of the most satisfying feelings. In 2017, I took a giant leap of faith and found my studio space in north Pacific Beach. I love my studio, I love my job, and I love helping people improve and succeed.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Well, this past year alone there have been a few obstacles. The latest challenge I’ve gone through is what everyone has gone through – Covid 19. Oh, and adopting a rescue pup! Transitioning from in-person sessions to virtual sessions was almost immediate because there was no time to think. I had clients with special needs and they needed my care. I wasn’t about to let them down. My husband told me about using Zoom. Within a week of California shutting down, I was a new Zoom customer and using video calls to guide my clients remotely. It allows my clients and I to maintain a consistent schedule no matter where we are. Currently, not as many clients are using the virtual method since I have reopened my studio doors once again, but it does give people more options. Who doesn’t love options?

As for my special pup, she has been a lot of work. I’ve never had my own dog before and my husband and I come to find out this sweet rescue pup has MAJOR separation anxiety! She is attached to my hip. When I left the house the very first time she got really upset. She started jumping, pushing into the front door, and howling for an hour. It was crazy. It’s been a year and she has improved a lot. Since I have seen so much PROGRESS, she is now officially the Avanti Pilates pup! She comes with me to work and greets every client with kisses and tail wags. She is a very special dog!

Through both of these challenges, I have grown tremendously over this past year and have learned how to adapt, evolve, and accept whatever life throws at me.

So what else should our readers know about Avanti Pilates?
The Pacific Beach studio is for private and semi-private sessions only. I believe in quality, not quantity, and every Avanti client receives our full attention. We ensure the client is safe and the session is bespoke. We cater to the client’s needs. I also believe Pilates is the foundation to all exercise, but I love to weave in different modalities I am certified in too: yoga, barre, geriatric disciplines, etc.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I think the most surprising thing I have experienced has been the meaningful relationships I have forged these past ten years. The friendships, with clients and colleagues, have developed effortlessly and make work so much more fun. It’s amazing how fast we become good friends.
