Today we’d like to introduce you to Edward Rushing.
Edward, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up very poor in Tennessee and saw firsthand how tough life can be for good, hardworking people that just couldn’t afford anything. I always swore that I would change my life the second I figured out how. As it turns out, the beginning of White Feather was very humble, it began when I read Rich Dad Poor Dad while leaning against a Humvee on a deployment to Afghanistan. The ideas in the book were very simple but incredibly powerful, and it inspired in me a desire to create financial freedom for myself and a belief that I could turn that into generational wealth for my family.
My wife Kimberly and I worked exhaustively to build our little rental portfolio. Even when I deployed three more times, she didn’t let that stop her, literally sleeping in the closet of a rental property one time after painting it for 30 hours straight!
Eventually, our knowledge and experience allowed us to build a network of investors and turnkey providers, and we created White Feather Investments, which is a company that helps military members and veterans create financial freedom through rental property investments. That in turn, led to more people wanting to learn our strategies, which led to the Real Estate Investment Accelerator, a six-month boot camp that not only teaches the strategies to be successful but also drives action. Since it started, the Accelerator has graduated almost 200 veterans who’ve invested in more than $280,000,000 worth of cash flow real estate!
In addition, because we live in Southern California, where energy is shockingly expensive, we decided to launch White Feather Solar, which is a company that helps our members offset their energy costs and improve their home value while getting a big tax credit. Since the very first month WFS was started, solar has been one of the most popular programs we have, and it’s only continuing to grow.
As of this writing, we have over 500 members across the nation and around the world, all of whom are chasing Financial Freedom while helping each other with strategies, business opportunities, deals, and investment capital. We are truly now a coalition of veterans who are not just protecting the American Dream. We are chasing it ourselves.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not! In 2020 I decided to transition out of the Active Duty Marine Corps and pursue our passion full time. Little did we know that in March of that year, a global pandemic would hit that would bring our economy to a screeching halt and threaten the very foundations of our businesses. We prayed a lot that year and worked extremely hard to keep everything on track with our personal rentals, our members’ investments, our Accelerator, and everything else in between. Imagine losing the only guaranteed paycheck you’ve ever known as an adult at the same time the world economy is thrown into chaos, and you have two kids under the age of three… that’s what 2020 was for us, plus we caught COVID on top of everything else!
What we did learn from that experience, though was a lesson I learned over 20 years ago when I arrived at the Naval Academy and promptly began failing at task after task. I wondered if I belonged there or if I could make it, and one thought would not leave my head: As long as my heart is still beating, I’m still in the fight. That thought stayed with us through the entire year and served to allow us to emerge on top and still growing.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about White Feather?
White Feather is not a Real Estate organization. It’s not a solar company. It’s not an educational company. White Feather is focused on a single mission, and all else fades to the background when that mission is not met: To help its members achieve Financial Freedom.
The reason for this is anyone who has served has seen men and women who were absolute heroes in uniform, gods on the battlefield, who transitioned out and fell completely apart. The fact is that when you lose that sense of purpose, the community, the paycheck, and the camaraderie, you have a giant hole that needs to be filled in your life… but you have no idea how to replace it. Most military struggle, and many turn to substance abuse or other destructive behaviors to cope. The worst cases end up in homelessness and suicide. But we can do better than that!
We know that if you just give us a sense of purpose and community – something to be challenge us for which we can be proud – we will rise to the occasion again. And we are seeing this over and over and over within White Feather. Our members come alive when they talk about their Financial Freedom journey because they know it’s way less about finances and way more about freedom. We all fought for the American Dream, but so few of us are actually living it. That’s why our mission supersedes everything else we do.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
My wife and children are the purest source of happiness for me. I also love educating people and helping them succeed. I also love Southern California and all that comes with it. Oh, and skydiving… skydiving is amazing. And Tesla, the greatest cars in the world!
