Community Highlights: Meet Jessica Rubin of Point Loma Sports Club

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Rubin.

Hi Jessica, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Fitness has always been a huge part of my life, thanks to my dad who was a passionate gym owner since before I was born. When my dad Gary Rubin founded Point Loma Sports Club in 2012, I started my career at 15 years old teaching classes and personal training, and eventually became manager and partner, working together with my dad as an unstoppable father-daughter duo.

In late 2020, my dad passed away after a challenging battle with cancer. I am endlessly inspired by his fight and commitment to health, and I am honored to keep his legacy alive at Point Loma Sports Club every day. My favorite thing about working in the fitness industry is the positive atmosphere it exudes. On top of that, Point Loma Sports Club is a small business that truly cares about each and every member that walks through our doors. PLSC is a place people come to enrich their lives, and it brings me great joy to come to work each day and hold space for our wonderful community.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing worth doing is ever easy, but I have noticed that I truly enjoy navigating challenges and finding solutions. I definitely get that from my dad. For us, the question is never “can I make this happen?” it’s “HOW can I make this happen?”. There were many struggles in the last 2 years, as there were for many businesses. 2 days after my dad passed away, gyms were ordered to cease indoor operations. While navigating the loss of someone who was a major role model in both my personal life and career, I had to think fast and strategically about how to keep the business alive.

My main goal at that time was to weather the storm and continue my dad’s legacy- and we did it! We are now celebrating 10 years as a business and I couldn’t be more grateful to our staff and community for helping make this happen. More challenges will come as they always do, but I am grateful for the ebbs and flows as they push me to be my best and always continue learning.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Point Loma Sports Club is a 25,000 sqft fitness facility in Liberty Station. Within the facility is a massive weight room with free weights, cables, cardio, and several key equipment pieces; as well as a huge Functional Training Arena with lifting platforms, turf, a basketball court, aerial silks, and a large variety of unique functional training equipment. We also have a specialized yoga studio, indoor cycle studio, and wellness center. A membership to the club includes full access to the entire facility, all classes and small group training, and amenities such as towel service, parking, an infrared sauna, showers, and lockers.

People are looking for a place, outside of home or work, to be recharged…and be part of a positive experience. We are more than just a gym or health club, we are a community. Unlike other facilities where ‘you are a number,’ our staff goes out of their way to know who you are, what your goals are, and how we can assist you to achieve your goals.

Everything here is top-of-the-line, from our equipment to our classes to our programs and our staff. We welcome every member with a smile. We treat people as we would a respected friend of the family. Our mission is to never lose sight of what is really important… to create an experience so positive for our members, guests, and co-workers; that a life of abundance is a natural result.

What do you think about luck?
I feel very lucky. There have been many moments where I look back and am in awe of all that we have accomplished as a business in the last 10 years. I am lucky to have such an amazing team by my side, and such incredible members of our club that have supported us through thick and thin.

I am so lucky, and more importantly grateful, to be given the opportunity to work in such an uplifting environment where my team and I actually look forward to coming to work every day.
