Community Highlights: Meet Kountinya Sai of Harmoney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kountinya Sai.

Hi Kountinya, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Twenty years ago, I started my career by joining a dot-com start-up. And now it seems like my world has turned a full circle as I launch Harmoney. And I’ve never felt as excited as I feel now.

After two decades of building & monetizing digital communities, I wanted to spend more time with my wife Vidya & our daughter Mitra, who has gone from being a tiny bundle of energy into a beautiful teen in the blink of an eye.

Until not so long ago, my work would take me around the world. Either traveling on work or working from home had its not-so-obvious pitfalls, especially when you are working across time zones. I would toggle between fatigue and ‘not being in the moment. I realized even when we were at a park on weekends or even in Hawaii during holidays, I was finding it hard to be present. My mind was always busy working on proposals and presentations, raising invoices, and achieving quarterly sales targets, and of course, following cricket games played across the world to collect information on advertisers.

Back in Jan 2019, after we came back from our vacation, I quit my job with the idea of starting something that had to have greater meaning both for me, my family, and the community at large.

On the top of my ‘to-do list was my personal fitness and desire to contribute in some way to a cause that I believed in. A quick online enneagram test revealed to myself that my personality type is of a helper

I made a commitment to Mitra & Vidya that we will donate $1 for every mile I run to underprivileged children’s education. So, we built a simple app to track my miles & save to donate. The app even gave me surprise rewards like a burger, beer, and desserts on cheat days & this turned out to be a game changer for me.

As I munched mile after mile, I started enjoying the process of running and feeling great about the idea that I was actually making a difference by contributing to a cause & to my own surprise, I ran the San Jose Rock n Roll Half-marathon with the help of the amazing volunteers at Asha Foundation. I literally moved from couch to 5K to half-marathon in less than 3 months!

This actually set Vidya and me thinking about creating something that would make a difference and at the same time, make it an enjoyable & rewarding experience. And thus, Harmoney was born – an app that nudges & rewards users to practice daily habits

Harmoney is a gamified digital wallet that nudges & motivates teens with rewards to practice self-care and improves their financial, physical & mental wellness through

– Sports themed Gamification

– AI-powered Personalized Nudge Engine

– Automated Giving to Charities & Social Causes

– Coupons & offers from local marketplace

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Wish it had been a smooth road but as we were preparing to launch harmoney, we were hit by the pandemic. In March 2020, I was in Dubai for a fundraiser roadshow & I came back not realizing that I was infected by the virus & I passed it on to Vidya & Mitra.

As COVID continued to spread rapidly, all the members in our product development team got infected one by one. Even though each & everyone in the team ultimately recovered, we lost significant amount of time & resources in the process

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Harmoney Inc?
We launched Harmoney on 4th June 2022 to promote physical wellness for Gen Z led by Paul Hamzey to celebrate the National Trails Day to support Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation.

Harmoney Inc hosted a walkathon on 4th June 2022 to promote physical wellness for Gen Z led by Paul Hamzey to celebrate the National Trails Day to support Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Choose your co-founders & advisors wisely, I am very fortunate to have my close friends Sudhir Moni, Managing Director & Chief of Staff and Dr Sam Albert PhD, Chief Data Scientist & CIO as my co-founders & to have Lisa Rodman, CEO of Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation, Yu-Kai Chou, Creator of Octalysis Framework, John Sander, Chairman Emirati of Washington DC Tech Council, Carolyn Reinmiller, President of Carolyn B Reinmiller Public Relations, Paddy Ramanathan, Founder & Managing Director of iValley Fintech Accelerator, Heather Ruiz, Founder & CEO of J3 Media as our advisors & mentors.

With the worst of the pandemic behind us, professional networking events are being organized again & digital networking events are much more effective than before.

The only advice we can share from our experience is to get out there and try to meet as many relevant people & businesses.
