Community Highlights: Meet Lisa Howe of Becoming Peaceful

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Howe.

Hi Lisa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been the friend others came to for help, support, and advice. It was no surprise I ended up receiving my Master’s Degree in Social Work from San Diego State University and supporting families in a variety of ways. Once I became a parent, I started reading parenting books and getting more clarity on the kind of parent I wanted to be. That reading and research led me to Dr. Laura Markham. In 2016, I was one of only 15 clinicians chosen worldwide to train with her to become a Certified Peaceful Parenting Coach. Since then, I have coached thousands of parents privately as well as teaching workshops and speaking at schools, parenting conferences, and private companies. I bring my education, lived experience, knowledge, deep listening, and a sense of humor to everything I do leaving clients and audiences feeling seen, heard and empowered on their parenting journey

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I am a social worker and had no experience starting a business whatsoever. I’ve had to learn as I go – trial and error – building something from the ground up. In the beginning, I had to do a lot of things outside of my comfort zone such as telling people about my business and encouraging folks to hire me. I’m a helper, not a salesperson so I had to really push myself to learn marketing skills and apply them in a way that still felt true to myself!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I help support families as they do the hardest job there is – parenting! The only job you do which doesn’t require any education or experience. For better or for worse (and often in between), we learn to parent from our own parents and often the parents who reach out to me for coaching want to do things differently. I specialize in peaceful parenting which boils down to being kind and firm. Peaceful parents have high expectations for their children and also offer high levels of support for them to reach those goals. Connection and empathy are the two most important relationship skills we have as parents and often those don’t come naturally to folks. I coach parents to see things from their child’s point of view, revise their expectations based on brain development, and reframe behavior as communication. In the last six years, I’ve built a strong social media following of over 20K and left my part-time job as a Medical Social Worker to devote my whole work-life to Becoming Peaceful. I work with parents one on one as well as offer group workshops.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I was born and raised in San Diego and I can’t imagine living anywhere else. I love how we can spend time at the ocean and the mountains in one day. Our family loves spending time outdoors and it’s a rare day you can’t do that here! As someone who has always lived here, I have seen the number of folks experiencing homeless increase so dramatically. I have a social worker heart and so much empathy for folks struggling.
