Community Highlights: Meet Nia Ruth of Nia Ruth Wine Club

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nia Ruth.

Hi Nia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I’m a wine-loving psychologist turned Wine Expert and Wine Club Founder! While completing my Ph.D. in psychology research at NYU and working for several years consulting in the social welfare space, I’d fallen completely in love with wine, and could no longer deny my desire to know, love, and sip more of it. It was a whirlwind from there: I took my first introductory wine course at San Diego State University in 2018, and have since completed my WSET levels 2 and 3, started blogging about wine, became the wine columnist at San Diego Magazine, and traveled far and wide visiting vineyards and trying some of the world’s most delicious wines throughout Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, South Africa, Morocco, Croatia, Israel, Mexico, and across the U.S.

During that time I learned the value of small-batch wine and how difficult small-production wines are to identify and access. Late last year, I took the plunge, left my 9 to 5, and began working on my Wine Club full-time so that I could bring delicious small-batch wines directly to wine lovers’ doorsteps all across the country. It’s been the best decision I’ve ever made!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m lucky that the road feels smooth most days, but there have absolutely been challenges! From Wine Club hosting platform switches (I’m not the most tech-savvy!) to strict shipping laws, I’ve come up against some tough roadblocks.

However, I went into entrepreneurship knowing it wouldn’t be an easy or linear journey, so I do my best to work through each challenge one step at a time and try to take time to celebrate even the smallest wins as often as I can!

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Nia Ruth Wine Club?
My Wine Club delivers three bottles of delicious boutique wines from a single small-batch winery (that you can’t find at your local wine shop!) to members’ doorsteps each month or quarter. We take a step beyond sharing great wine and host a live virtual tasting with each producer so members can learn the stories behind each bottle directly from the producers themselves! The Club helps members expand their palate, refine their preferences, and gather the skills to select great wines, all while becoming part of a wine-loving community. I also recently began offering corporate gifting options and curating wine selections for corporate and private events which have been a lot of fun!

I am incredibly proud of the strong community I’ve built, and the big improvements I’ve seen in my members’ wine confidence and knowledge. Seeing my members’ eyes light up when they learn something new or try (and love!) a new wine is such an incredible feeling! I am also proud of supporting small wineries by spreading the word about them and getting their wines into new wine lovers’ hands across the country. Small wineries are the heart and soul of the industry, and I love doing my part to help them thrive.

And finally, I’m proud of the philanthropic component of the Club. Supporting vulnerable populations will always be incredibly important to me, and I am completely dedicated to structuring my business so that I am able to contribute to important causes each month – there’s nothing that brings me more happiness! To date, we’ve donated to causes from cancer research to environmental protection, to animal rescue, and I’m looking forward to continuing to expand that list!

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Everyone that I’ve met in the wine industry is surprised to know that I started my career as a psychologist because it’s such a huge shift from what I do now!

Funny enough though, when people find out about my background in research and consulting, they’re able to connect the dots between my two careers as I’m very people-oriented and I take a highly analytical approach to my business.
