Community Highlights: Meet Olivia Felix of HAMOC hand-woven

Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Felix.

Hi Olivia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I am Olivia Felix, founder of HAMOC hand-woven. I am a Mexican-born American living in San Diego, CA. During 2021, I decided to take a year-long trip through the Caribbean, Central America, and Mexico. While on this incredible trip, I spent countless hours under the sun, in the ocean, and of course swinging in hammocks. I quickly realized that hammocks are a symbol of self-care in the countries I was visiting. I spent most of my trip in the Southern Coast of Mexico, where hammock weaving is an art in all its form. I had the pleasure to meet a few artisans in different areas of Oaxaca until I was introduced to the people of a community of Zapotec weavers. The artisans of this community have been weaving hammocks as an art for many generations. After traveling throughout all these places and meeting the people of these regions, I made it my goal to share a small piece of the everyday life and customs in these beautiful countries with the rest of the world. With a background in International Economics Studies, I had always had the goal of owning my business, now with HAMOC, I am able to put all that in practice, while also helping people in remote areas of Mexico.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The mission at HAMOC is to support small communities in Mexico through fair trade. The art of hammock weaving has been part of these communities for generations. At HAMOC we work closely and directly with the Zapotec weavers of a small community in Oaxaca Mexico. We aim to provide fair and sustainable working conditions for the artist weavers, in order to share their art outside of the remote areas of their villages. Simultaneously, we are able to bring our customers a comfortable, vibrant, and fairly traded collection of hammocks. Our hammocks are crafted 100% by hand with cotton or nylon. HAMOC serves as functional art, with its beautiful patterns and colors, each hammock is designed thinking about our customer’s relaxation, support, and our product durability. The art of weaving each hammock can take from 5-8 days to complete.

HAMOC also works closely with our customers for all custom-made orders in order to provide a vibrant and unique hammock for any space.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
