Community Highlights: Meet Shannon Higgins of Studio Barre Franchising

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Higgins.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Actually, my career in Barre began at the age of three in the form of Ballet. After nearly two decades of growing up in a ballet studio and stage, I traded my tutus and point shoes for suits and pumps as I progressed through a more traditional period of working 9 to 5 while becoming a wife and mother of three. As fulfilling as that was, something was missing from the working part of the equation. I enjoyed and found rewarding my marketing career but it soon became evident that returning to a life of fitness would provide the sorely needed flexibility needed for a healthy and happier work-life balance. After a couple of certifications, I entered into the world of personal training which ultimately introduced me to my first barre class. And That Was All She Wrote.

My life took an almost immediate detour into the then mostly unknown world of barre in 2007. Within a span of six months from that day, I became a regular client, barre instructor, and studio owner within this newly formed barre outfit. This turn of events allowed me to utilize all my passions of Ballet, fitness and marketing which in turn led to the best byproduct I could have hoped for…Studio Barre – a culture-based company that naturally challenges, inspires and hopefully, changes the physical and mental lives of every client that ‘walks into the barre’ for the better.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Opening a new business/brand is never a smooth road but unbelievably rewarding. A career in Fitness in general is a labor of love. Starting a fitness brand is a passion project. There are many potholes to navigate that are not limited to the standard issues involving actually starting any business. What I found most challenging was the need to differentiate our product from the existing competition. There are so many amazing fitness techniques. We at Studio Barre have no doubt our technique sets a standard for a total body workout, but it is our “fun, effective and sassy” culture that I believe defines us and sets us apart.

Other challenges include acquiring new clients. This is always top of mind for and business owner. We always believed that if we could get someone to try a class, we could gain a client for life. Barre in general can be intimidating to those new to the technique… Tailoring your marketing to alleviate the fear factor of trying something new is the first step. Providing a warm and welcoming environment has served us and our clients well for many years.

The era of Covid has of course challenged many industries. None more so than fitness studios and gyms. Adapting to this ever-changing obstacle has been our single biggest challenge. How can we provide our product to the public when our studios are forced to drastically reduce the number of classes or close their doors altogether. Even though most larger barre brands had existing online classes available, my position has always been to concentrate on the brick and mortar experience of Studio Barre. It’s where the magic happens, the energy, the community. The Covid curve ball changed all that. Our studios filmed virtual classes and Studio Barre on Demand was developed to fill the gaps while also gaining a new client base who would not have otherwise been able to experience SB due to lack of proximity to a studio.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Studio Barre Franchising?
I LOVE being a studio owner! I truly believe that it is the most rewarding “job” someone could do. Once you see the change you can make in a person’s day and sometimes their life, you realize that you wish EVERYONE could do what you do. So in 2012, I took my passion to the next level and became a franchise! We opened ten new Studio Barre franchised locations in the first 18 months. By 2020, we had grown to 21 locations nationwide. Like so many other fitness brands, we lost some of our locations due to Covid but have grown and adapted as a company in so many including starting the newest arm of our brand…STUDIO BARRE ONDEMAND.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Studio Barre Franchising is 100% owned and run by women!

As for me personally, I am a sci-fi junky who loves horseback riding and being on the back of my husband’s motorcycling with music and no particular destination.
