Community Highlights: Meet Sherry Chen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherry Chen.

Hi Sherry, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Ever since I was young, I knew that I’d want to be an entrepreneur when I grew up. My life has taken me through an amazing journey from San Diego to San Francisco. Along the way, I’ve graduated from UCLA, and I’ve done everything from working as a pastry chef to web design, and from food blogging to becoming a digital marketing expert working with Fortune 500 companies as my clientele.

After six years in the digital marketing space, I decided to make a career shift and answer my calling to become a real estate agent. I’ve always been obsessed with homes and real estate. Growing up, I always had fond memories of going to Open Houses for fun with my mom, a self-made entrepreneur who started a home remodeling firm in San Diego from the ground up. My mom is an immigrant from Taiwan, and her strength, bravery, and perseverance all make a huge part of who I’ve become today.

Today, as a real estate agent, it is actually the first “job” I’ve ever had where I can confidently say that I love what I do – everyday. I help first-time homebuyers achieve their lifelong goals of owning property and I find my work to be incredibly fulfilling. I also work with many young investors who are taking the leap into real estate investing, and I help them get started with building their long-term wealth for decades to come. I truly believe that all of my experiences throughout my career have led me to this point. There’s nothing else that I can imagine myself doing, and I look forward to helping more and more people achieve their dreams.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Right after college, I took a leap of faith and moved to San Francisco to get out of SoCal, where I’d been all my life. Within the three years that I lived there, I had six different jobs ranging from pastry chef to leasing luxury apartments in downtown. It was not easy being so young and trying to discover myself in a big (and expensive) city.

After a few stints job hopping, I decided to take a 2-month backpacking trip to Europe with my best friend. Although it was an incredible experience, I realized that when I got back, I had nearly depleted all my savings. This was probably my lowest point financially and emotionally, especially coming off the high of a life-changing experience through Europe.

I had to figure things out quickly, and with some networking, I was able to land a gig as a whiskey sampler at the SFO airport. It’s certainly not the most glamorous job being a whiskey girl! But I valued the opportunity and I worked hard and eventually becoming one of the top in sales. Eventually, my sales skills helped me get hired at my next job in the tech space. And from there, the rest is history!

I always loved this saying, “Pressure creates diamonds.” Anytime I am struggling with something or dealing with an overwhelming challenge, I remind myself that it is during these difficult times is when it’s time to really hustle and the best opportunities will present themselves.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in real estate investments and Accessory Dwelling Units. Many of the clients I work with are young millennials who are motivated to purchase their first property as an investment and not just a home. It’s inspiring to work with the passion and drive that my clients have who are motivated to build their long-term wealth through real estate. From fixer-uppers to selling 2-4 multiunit properties, I help my clients analyze and underwrite deals to help ensure that they are making a smart investment.

I also specialize in Accessory Dwelling Units. I got my background in ADUs while working for a local architecture firm. Through that experience, I gained a thorough knowledge of local development rules and regulations that surround ADUs. We have a housing shortage in San Diego, and I truly believe that ADUs are the solution to providing more affordable housing. I’ve helped many of my clients find properties with ADU potential, and they are able to achieve their goals by building a second dwelling on their property. Whether it’s to collect rental income to offset their mortgage or house their aging parents, there are so many benefits to ADUs and I’m proud to help my clients reach their goals.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Some of my favorite childhood memories involve watching my dad cook. My dad was always the chef in the family. Cooking was definitely his way of showing us his love and his medium for creative expression as it is for me. I’ve always been a big foodie and passionate about cooking. I’m pretty sure I got it from him! I worked as a pastry chef for a brief moment in time, and I loved the concept of making something extraordinary out of a few simple ingredients like flour and eggs. One day, I hope to open my own cafe and wine bar where I can share my favorite culinary creations.
