Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Rasdal.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a working Mom of two kids, ages 14 and 4. I traded my corporate job for consulting and make more money than most executives. Now I live a very blended life with almost no boundaries. I work and play every day. I typically work half my work day during the day and the other half at night. I take several professional level dance classes a week and water-ski every other Friday morning. Although I love to cook, these days we mostly live on raw fruits and vegetables, peanut butter and frozen burritos. I’m quick on the mute button and I can tell you a foolproof way to do a professional conference call from Disneyland.
I have been an independent consultant for 15 years and I love it! The advantages are freedom, flexibility, control, interesting and engaging work, good pay and sometimes equity. My primary consulting practice is focused on medical devices and large internet projects www.rasdal.com. 10 years ago I founded Billable at the Beach® to give people a jump start in independent consulting.
Two years ago, I started Billable with Baby®. I liberate corporate working mothers. The mission of Billable with Baby® is to empower working mothers to start their own consulting businesses so they can have the freedom and flexibility to raise their children the way they wish. I am building this online. www.BillableWithBaby.com
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s surprisingly easy to start your own consulting business. All you need is a computer, a phone, brainpower and business experience. The work is the same as the work you’ve been doing in your corporate job only better. If you start right away, you can be doing billable work as soon as next week.
Then comes the hard work and risk. Although it’s shockingly easy to get started, a solid consulting practice is built through hard work and a willingness to takethe risk. No check goes into my bank account unless I go out and win the business. In consulting, you have to hunt what you eat. I get out the binoculars, climb the mountain, scout the herd, get out my bow and arrow, shoot it, kill it, cook it, eat it, and throw away the bones. It’s all up to me. If you want to build a sustainable consulting business, there is no way to avoid being directly responsible for landing projects. This is a bit of a funny analogy since I’ve been a vegetarian for many years, but the important point is that you have to hunt what you eat in consulting. There is no grocery store.
It is important to remember that done is better than perfect. 90% of success is showing up. Sure, you have to be smart and have a good attitude but these will not help you if you don’t show up. I believe that if you show up all the time and add a heaping scoop of “fake it ‘til you make it”, you are pretty much guaranteed to succeed. So, show up, take action and always remember DONE IS BETTER THAN PERFECT!
And last but not least, find pleasure in the small things. Each morning I look forward to that first, hot, fragrant sip of Earl Grey tea. In that moment, I feel richer than any king. I face the sink full of dirty dishes in the morning after breakfast content that we have the means to start our day with a hot and healthy meal. I make the beds and fold the laundry revelling in the luxury of having fresh beds and clean clothes every day. I find a certain meditative tranquillity in performing these same chores day after day after day, choosing not to be annoyed by the repetitiveness. My Dad always said, “Change your perspective, change your world.”
what should we know about Billable with Baby®? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am passionate about empowering working mothers to have meaningful careers with the flexibility to raise their children the way they wish. I don’t want anyone else to experience the heartbreak of the mother sobbing at her 6-week postpartum check-up because her employer refused to allow her more than 6 weeks of maternity leave or the female CFO sent on an emergency business trip the morning of October 31, missing Halloween with her two young sons.
I am on top of the world. Some days I forget I still work full time! I can work when I want, where I want and how I want. I work half my workday during the day and a half at night. I can go on every school field trip if I want to. I am able to have more impact on my clients as a consultant than I could as a full-time employee and I make more money. It still takes some juggling but now I have the best of both worlds. If I can do it, anyone can do it.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
My favorite podcast is Working Parent Resource https://workingparentresource.com/podcast/
One of my greatest passions is dancing. I can take a 90-minute dance class and come away feeling like I have just spent a week in Hawaii. Can you imagine? Can you imagine having something like that in your life? There are no ties to work or finances or responsibilities. I don’t go there because I should. I go there because I want to. I go there because it feeds me. I go there to be immersed in a completely different world. My favorite studio is San Diego Dance Theater http://www.sandiegodancetheater.org/.
And I could never life this best life without the support of my family and friends.
