Conversations with the Inspiring Ashley Yandle

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Yandle.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a personal trainer, fitness studio owner, traveler, and lover of a good food wine. I am originally from LA and moved to San Diego for college. After graduating from UCSD, I entered the world of technology and then medical device sales. I thought if I were making enough money I would be happy…I learned that I put way too much of myself into my career to not be emotionally and mentally fulfilled by what I do.

My boyfriend suggested I take a three-month break to figure out what I really wanted to do with my life (in typically type A fashion I thought I should just go to grad school lol). I decided to listen to him, and quit my secure corporate job with my 401k and benefits, and set off to figure out what I really wanted to do with my life.

I found my passion for helping people transform their lives through health and fitness. I am so thankful to have found the health and fitness world. My clients have become extended family. I have trained them for first dates, weddings, babies, new jobs, vacations, and all the life brings us.

I opened Ashley Lane Fitness in 2012 as a personal trainer and yoga instructor. I absolutely love getting to help people achieve goals they never thought they could and watching them grow physically and mentally. I quickly maxed out on the number of clients I could take in a day and eventually decided to open a large fitness studio in 2016.

My idea was that I would have offered everything at one studio: Indoor Cycling, Bootcamp, yoga, barre, personal training, and I did!! The most amazing community grew out of the studio, and I will forever be grateful for the friends I have made and the lessons I have learned.

But in May of 2018, I made a really tough decision and decided to stop the group fitness and indoor cycling classes. I had gotten so far away from why I had opened the studio and my mission, and I was spending more time running the studio than working with my clients.

Today, I work one on one and in small groups doing personal training as well as lead Saturday boot camps. I started, Traveling Toned, as a way to share my advice on how to enjoy life while staying toned with a larger audience.

Studio Lifted also offers massage and cupping, acupuncture, therapy, and has two Estheticians. We have become a health and wellness collective, and it is amazing to be surrounded by other female business owners who all have the same vision to help others become healthier and happier.

Has it been a smooth road?
Part of being a business owner means that you need to be able to change and adapt easily. I have had to regroup several times over the years in order to stay true to who I am and why I started my company. You need to be able to check your ego at the door, or it can take you and your business down.

It’s ok if an idea doesn’t work out the way you thought it would. The most successful people in business have failed. The difference between those who succeed and those who do not is those who succeed learned from their failures. It is how we grow.

My advice for young women who are just starting their journey is to take it slow, start small. Define your audience and your brand. Make sure all of your business decisions align with your core values and mission statement. If a decision doesn’t fit with your core values, mission statement, and brand then you need to change your decision or your brand. Ask for help. Know what you are good at and do that. Ask others who help in the areas that are challenging for you. Stay true to who you are and why you started your business.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Studio Lifted and Traveling Toned story. Tell us more about the business.
Studio Lifted specializes in custom health and fitness plans for our clients. As a personal trainer and a corrective exercise specialist, making sure my clients have a plan that is tailor-fitted to their goals and their lifestyle, is my main focus. A plan is only effective if a client does it. So finding out what works for them and allows them to meet their goals while enjoying their life is crucial.

Studio Lifted offers One on One and Small Group Personal Training, Saturday Community Bootcamps, and our Online Community. My goal is that we have a level of personalize training and coaching available to everyone.

What sets us apart from others is our Small Group Personal Training Sessions. I created this program as a way to offer a high level of training you receive from a personal trainer, but at a price, more people can afford. Each client gets a custom workout based on their fitness goals and their progress from session to session.

I am most proud of the community at Studio Lifted. We show up for each other in and out of the studio, and I truly consider them family.

Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
Michelle Obama is a huge inspiration for me. I was honored to meet her earlier this year at the MindBody BOLD conference.

She has always made health and fitness a priority in her own life, even during the stress of motherhood, working, and a presidency. Her Let’s Move! Campaign focusses on giving parents the support they need to make healthier choices for their kids. Her goal is to solve the epidemic of childhood obesity within a generation.
