Conversations with the Inspiring Britney Rae

Today we’d like to introduce you to Britney Rae.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Britney. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I began this project back in 2014 to help clients discern my self-portraiture and modeling work from my various photography genres I also shoot of/for others. Presently, Los Olivos (Central California) based, originally from East County San Diego, USA Photographer covering the genres of Model Portfolios & Portraiture, Candid, Family Portraits, Glamour, Nude, Fine Art, Black and White, Lingerie, Boudoir, Conceptual, Animals/Pets, Landscapes, Commercial (product shots; i.e. makeup or hair stylists, etc.), Digital retouching, and various design services. Phantasmagorical Arts Photography is owned and run by artist and self-portraitist, Miss Britney Rae. The project’s name was conjured as a means to reflect what is known as the “artist’s eye”. Phantasmagorical meaning, “to have an illusory aesthetic, as if something in a dream or created by the imagination… having the appearance of an optical illusion, especially one produced by a magic lantern… or changing or shifting, as a scene made up of many elements.” I strive to empower others -predominantly women- from all walks of life. I want those who work with me to feel better about themselves, and more confident with who they are. My lens knows no bounds, for beauty can be found anywhere and in anyone.

Has it been a smooth road?
If all was smooth sailing, I don’t think my work would necessarily be productive or hold the same value as it does for me and others like me. I originally dabbled with photography 10 years ago amidst adolescence as an artistic outlet. Through many trials and tribulations since, I’ve developed PTSD among a bucket full of other tricky obstacles. I had endured a lot of trauma, and I eventually found myself alone (before my husband of course). I turned to self-portraiture as my therapy, and by doing this, I rediscovered myself. Through photography, I’ve found a sense of empowerment and strength I never knew I possessed, and after a few years of solely doing self-portraiture, I decided I wanted to expand; to create another platform so I could potentially help others tap into the power and beauty they too behold within. My advice would be to always put your mental health and happiness first. Comparing the achievements of others with your own is a distraction, and will not serve you well. Whether it is photography or another endeavor, it’s about exceeding your own expectations, growing, learning, and ultimately being better than who you were yesterday.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Phantasmagorical Arts Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m most known for my self-portraiture and modeling work under the name, Miss Britney Rae. I’m mostly self-taught, however, I spent a few years on and off in college to further advance my skills as a photographer. I feel my work is never complete, and there is always something new for me to discover or improve on. I’m most proud of the fact that I am a one-woman business. I started everything on my own, and continue to. Everything that goes into setting up a photo shoot (i.e. equipment, wardrobe, makeup, hair, styling, time, energy, retouching), promoting my personal portraits/ modeling on top of my separate photography project and digital-retouching services through social media, print, and digital publications, galleries, etc. I’ve always liked the idea of creating things by myself, for myself, and maintaining it. I’ve never had a team of people on my shoots. I don’t pay too much attention to other self-portrait artists or photographers or models, albeit I adore many. I try to stay focus on my own path and hope others may want to be apart of it.

Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
Remain true to yourself and really take the time to reflect on your reasons for choosing this career. Sometimes people can become conflicted and realize they began something for the wrong reasons or lose sight of their roots. Authenticity and passion are key.
