Conversations with the Inspiring Carmen Lopez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carmen Lopez.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Carmen. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
About a year and a half ago, I was in graduate school studying to be a therapist. I loved it and my clients, but there was a part of me that felt extremely exhausted all the dang time. I realized that I needed a creative outlet in my life, which is what pushed me to pick up my camera again. I started taking pictures of anything and everyone that would let me. From that point on, I booked my first wedding through a friend and the rest is history.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
HA, not at all. Starting and running your own business can be an extremely isolating thing at times. So often, you will run into a problem and have no idea where to begin in tackling it. Something that I have learned is that you are going to fail- all the time. Maybe not catastrophically, but you will find yourself messing up constantly and although it is never an easy lesson to learn, it is both an annoying and beautiful thing and almost always leads to growth. My advice for other women is surround yourself by peers and mentors who are doing the same thing. They are by far your greatest source of strength and guidance.

What should we know about Carmen Lopez Photography? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a wedding photographer, which includes any and all types of weddings from a destination, to local, to elopements, etc. My brand is something that has developed throughout the years, and truly a reflection of myself. I write how I speak, and sometimes, that includes cursing like a sailor. But it is something I am so proud of, as my work really is an extension of me, and something I see myself growing through both on a business and personal level.

Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
Ugh, women are the best. There are so many strong women that have inspired me in my life, but the OG of it all is my mom. She takes no crap, says it how it is, and manages to be the most loving and supportive woman along the way. She really is magnificent and if I can represent or remind anyone of even a fraction of her, that’s amazing.
