Conversations with the Inspiring Christine Baker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Baker.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After spending over 20 years in the insurance industry, I took a few years off while our children were in middle & high school. Once they were finished in high school, my husband and I decided to move to Coronado, and we embarked on a project to build a home there.  During the design stages, we moved Downtown to change things up and experience an urban lifestyle. That’s where I started my real estate career. It was a tremendous opportunity to live in a dynamic community and become an expert in the Downtown districts and condos buildings downtown. From luxury high rise units with spectacular views to hip, loft style studios, I became very knowledgeable in the market and properties both Downtown and the metro areas.

Moving to Coronado in 2009 was an amazing experience, as was the design and construction of a 5600 square foot craftsman style home.  Inspired by the Green Brothers who are well known in the Pasadena area for the many craftsman style homes they designed and built. The project provided me with great information and experience in design concepts, interior finishes and overall construction process that I could share with my clients, many of which apply to the remodeling process too.

Living in a variety of communities, from suburbia to downtown to coastal island living, I have firsthand lifestyle insights unmatched by most of my competition and it is so valued by my clients.

Today, I am honored to be a top producing agent with Willis Allen a boutique brokerage in San Diego for over 100 years. We have local roots but far-reaching global connections through our exclusive affiliations with Luxury Portfolio International and Christie’s International Real Estate. I am also well-respected by my peers and clients.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The short answer is “no”; but without challenges we will not grow and experience a full life.  Life will always have its struggles but focus and hard work are what really prevails. In 2008 when I got my license, the real estate market was declining.  However, my philosophy was, if it’s at the bottom there is only one way to go – UP. There were times when I didn’t have any promising prospects and it was depressing. I had a business plan and continued to work the plan by going into the office every day. 80% of success is just showing up!   I also got connected with a couple of volunteer organizations where I felt I was making a difference although my business was in the beginning stages. Eventually, if you do the right things consistently, the business opportunities will come.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Willis Allen Real Estate ~ Luxury Portfolio International ~ Christie’s International Real Estate story. Tell us more about it.
I chose to align myself with Willis Allen Real Estate after 18 months in the business.  The first company I worked with was corporately owned and it was not the structure that offered the best resources for me and my clients.  Willis Allen Real Estate has been in business for 105 years and is locally owned and operated. The company is highly respected in the industry for their integrity and reputation in the luxury real estate market. With strong local roots, Willis Allen also provides an unmatched global reach through their exclusive affiliations with Christie’s International Real Estate and Luxury Portfolio International who are intimately connected with national and global real estate companies, trends and services targeted to the high net worth individuals.

Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
Mother Teresa is among the most inspirational women I have read about. Not only did she have a compassionate heart to serve those who were tremendously underprivileged, but she was a shrewd businesswoman who negotiated with her religious colleagues, government agencies and heads of countries to advocate and provide much needed services for the poor – and I mean POOR. She was never satisfied with what she accomplished as there was always more to do.  She is an inspiration and through my volunteer work with Friends of Downtown, raising scholarship funds for underprivileged students at San Diego City College I feel there is a part of Mother Teresa in me.

I have had many female role models and mentors some personal and many professional.  My mother was a highly intelligent women who was born in a time when most women did not have the financial opportunity to continue with higher education.  But my mother embraced hard work, honesty, dress for success and always take the high road. These are traits instilled in my which contribute hugely to my success.  In the professional world, I would find the most successful woman in the company or office, observe and emulated the things they did that meshed with my values.
