Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Towery.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was in college as an accounting major, realizing that this wasn’t what I wanted to do with my life. I knew that I would make great money in that field, which is why I chose it to begin with; but soon realized that there was more to life than JUST making great money.
That is when I decided to start truly thinking about what I wanted in life, and how to achieve it. I never thought of cosmetology as a career at that point; mainly because of the negative stigmas that went along with it. That whole “beauty school drop out” mentality, that people only went to beauty school as option “B”, or to do as a hobby, was all I ever heard. No one made “real” money doing this, right? WRONG.
The beauty industry was in my veins, I just didn’t know what exactly, or which avenue to take. My parents always called me their “little fashionista” growing up. I was always playing dress up, doing my hair and makeup, getting all of my friends ready for every dance, pep-rally or promotion. They knew that this was going to be my path in life, way before I ever did.
In 2012, I took my first leap into this industry, blindly, not knowing anyone, or where to go from there. Luckily, I made quick friends with a girl whose sister had been in the industry for years. Right out of school, feeling lost and uncertain, she took us both under her wing and helped mold us into the stylists and businesswomen we are today.
Fast forward to 2019, I am flourishing in my career, as the head of our branding department, I am helping to build this amazing new salon, with that same mentor I began my career under years ago. I knew the day she asked me to be a part of this new journey, that this was going to be something HUGE, and we would be making big moves in this field, We’ve now been open just under three months, are at max capacity with our stylists. And I just can’t wait to see what heights this new chapter in my life will take my career.
Has it been a smooth road?
Definitely not! I could not tell you how many times I wanted to throw in the towel, hide under a rock, or go back to accounting school. All I can say is this industry TESTS you. It throws you around like a rag doll, and after all that, the world still has this impression that it’s easy. Which makes you all the more frustrated.
My best piece of advice is, to be that 2%, is to know that you CAN do this, that it is WORTH it, and that you are a BADASS for sticking with it. Get yourself a mentor, one you truly feel comfortable with and who is going to build you up when you feel like I did first start out. Because it isn’t easy, and sometimes you will need a little pick me up, and that’s OKAY! I tell my assistant all the time, I have been there, and it does get better! But you have to put in the work.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into GURU Salon story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in the art of all things blonde! I thoroughly take pride in my work, knowing that I have the skills and education to achieve the looks that my guests have been striving for. For the length of my career, I have continually kept up on our ever-growing, ever-changing industry trends, furthering my knowledge with hands-on advanced training courses, as well as making the guests experience extraordinary. Maintaining a positive and healthy relationship with each and every one of my clients is just as important to me as the technical side of our industry.
Along with my behind-the-chair role, I also have become our lead branding director for the salon. GURU being so new, we need to make waves in this industry from the start. My main focus outside the chair is to help grow not only my individual business but GURU as a whole, so all of our stylists thrive, and receive the recognition they so desperately deserve. We have some mad talent in our salon, and it would be a shame for them not to be showcased adequately.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
Britt Seva is a Godsend! I found her back in my wee days of doing hair, and her Thrivers Society and podcasts are literally game-changing.
