Today we’d like to introduce you to Darcy Cantrell.
Darcy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
When I was a girl, I didn’t daydream about being a wife or a mother; I daydreamed about magic. Magic was absolutely real to me, and my internal landscape was saturated with unicorns, mermaids, and fairies. Because my reality was unique, I was distinctly different than the other kids; I felt ostracized and isolated. 20 years later I found myself stuck- insecure, 100 lbs overweight, in a toxic relationship, unfulfilled in my personal and professional life. I had internalized my social struggles in grade school as a narrative that I was unworthy of love, respect, and acceptance. When I hit my lowest low, I made a decision. I would turn everything around, and nothing would stop me. I left the relationship and my former self behind for good. I lost 80 pounds, became healthy, worked on myself mentally and emotionally, and in the process found yoga. This practice began as a physical fitness arena for me, yet very quickly revealed itself to me as profoundly healing to the body, mind, heart, and spirit. It lit me up. It gave me peace. It reintroduced me to my essential beauty, the charm of my uniqueness, the beauty of an authentic human heart, and the pure bliss of life itself.
In Yoga, I rediscovered magic. After this discovery, the rest has seemed a whirlwind. I did my 200-hour teacher training and started teaching yoga as I hit the ground running. Teaching felt like the right key fitting into the lock of my soul. It has been my greatest pleasure to be able to share the magic of yoga with others. Over the next few years, I finished my 500-hour teacher training, married the love of my life, had a beautiful daughter, became the lead singer of a funk band called UpFunk, and began leading yoga teacher training. Life has truly been magical! These days you can find me teaching yoga, singing with my band at local venues, or snuggling with my family. When I leave to go to yoga teacher training, my daughter Zoe says that I’m going to “wizard school.” And it’s true!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road! Making an entire life overhaul required me to look at my own issues with self-esteem, discipline, addiction, and self-sabotage. I am still learning how to be better. Nothing, however, has introduced me to my own strength more powerfully than overcoming these obstacles and coming out the other side. My advice to other women would be to find your unique gifts that you offer and hold on tight to them! I want every woman, and every person, to connect to the gorgeous flame of their soul and allow it to shine out into the world. It is so easy to lose oneself in comparison and the idea that there is one way to be perfect and measuring up against that metric. But people are the most beautiful, radiant, happy, at peace, most relatable and endearing when they are authentically and unapologetically themselves. No one else can be you! That’s your superpower.
What should we know about your work? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I teach yoga at Yoga Six in Carlsbad, Solana Beach, 4S Ranch, and at the Soul of Yoga in Encinitas. My favorites to teach are Yin yoga and Hot yoga. I also play shows all over North County San Diego with my band UpFunk.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I am always curious about yogic texts, from the Yoga Sutras to books on adjustments. I read anything and everything yoga! My shelves are full and don’t even get me started on the Amazon cart!
