Today we’d like to introduce you to Destiny Ruiz.
Destiny, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a proud San Diego Native and small business owner. I have been a Licensed Cosmetologist in the state of California since October of 2010. Like most, I always knew “what I wanted to be when I grew up” and as cliche, as it may sound, I absolutely love what I do and my passion for the beauty industry grows more and more every single day.
Over the last decade, I have had the chance to work in various salon-type settings including traveling during a 9-month work contract on a Cruise Ship as an International Hair Stylist, working at a Blow Dry Bar, managing a luxury spa downtown and even had the chance at creating the curriculum to teach a Hair Styling Course at a local beauty school. All of these experiences helped me to not only build and maintain the solid clientele I have today but also to gain the confidence and skills I needed to eventually go into business for myself. It took years off from when I really started establishing my clientele downtown in 2013 but has definitely paid off. Three years ago, I finally gave myself the chance to create what is now, Unlimited Beauty Studio. Aside from running my own business, I also spend part of my time traveling as a Freelance Hair Stylist/Makeup Artist for three Mobile Beauty Service companies. No one said owning your own business was easy, but most fail to mention how fun and rewarding it can actually be when you really love what you do.
Has it been a smooth road?
When I think of my career up until now, explaining it as a “smooth road” would be far from the truth. I once came across a quote that read: “Talking about our problems is our greatest addiction. Break the habit. Talk about your joys.” It’s advice that we hear different variations of on a daily basis but is for some reason hard to put into action. Especially when coming across situations that leave you to overcome with the overwhelming feelings of self-doubt and defeat. This simple quote really helped me realize and fully understand that nothing good comes from focusing on the negative things in life. Again, sometimes easier said than done. I have personally encountered many obstacles and have had to make lots of sacrifices to get to this point in not only my career but in life in general. Having a negative mindset in the past has only proven one thing time and time again – it only allowed me a way of hindering my own success. Even after ten years into my career, I am still learning that there will always be challenges, big or small, that I have yet to face. I now fully understand the power I have to change a negative situation into, at the very least, a positive learning experience and that only I get to determine exactly how big or small a challenge will be. I have found that by staying focused and working hard, I am able to avoid most challenges or make the ones I cannot avoid easier to overcome. I have had to teach myself to not make permanent (usual heat of the moment and emotionally triggered) decisions on what most times prove themselves to be, temporary situations. I have accepted that things will not always go exactly as planned. Simply hope for the best while simultaneously being prepared for what could appear to be the worst. If I can give anyone at least one piece of advice, it would be to give yourself the option to remain optimistic. By believing that you are capable of handling whatever obstacle that may come your way, it helps lessen the fear of the inevitable. We are our worst critics, and rarely allow ourselves the chance to acknowledge or celebrate our successes. Like the quote simply suggests, “… talk about your joys.”
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Unlimited Beauty Studio story. Tell us more about the business.
My ultimate vision and goal for my company were to be able to provide my clients with the convenience of a “one-stop shop.” I love every single aspect of the beauty industry and always despised the idea of having to limit myself to one specialty or a single set of services. I made it my personal mission straight out of cosmetology school to utilize my cosmetology license to the fullest extent. I wanted to be able to offer as many services that my licensing would permit. This particular mindset and the overall goal are what helped me set myself apart from others in my industry. That fact that I am able to offer a full range of services to my clients is what makes me exclusive and keeps my clients coming back! It also allows me to show my creativity in so many different ways on a daily basis and in some cases, all during one appointment! Over the years, I have perfected my skills and have since then been able to accommodate all service inquiries that include hair, nails, full body waxing, and makeup. The beauty industry is ever changing and as beauty professionals, we have to be able to confirm. Most recently I have also been offering on-demand mobile beauty services which have also been a great way to set myself apart from others! My clients love the option and convenience of having me come to them and it has opened up so many more opportunities to ensure that I remain busy and booked! Without my clients, I would not be where I am at today, so I try to make sure I accommodate them as much as possible! I essentially help my clients look and feel their best with the services I provide, whether is be in-studio or in the convenience of their own home. I would never want my clients to have to do without these little things that make them happy, so it will always be my goal to conform to not only my industry but to their needs as well!
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
