Conversations with the Inspiring Erin Kendall

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Kendall.

Erin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Fitness was a personal discovery project turned career. I fell in love with the way fitness made me feel and had the need to continue exploring the topic. One thing led to another and I was introduced to an amazing program at UCSD, Exercise Science, and Program Design. I had never been more excited to get into the classroom. Learning the way the body responds to fitness was fascinating and I felt other people had to know this too. I quickly learned that starting my own Personal Training business was the way to go as I was able to put my own touch on the programming and client experience. My background is hospitality management, so the experience just had to be the first priority. One thing I know for sure; if someone isn’t enjoying the experience they aren’t going to keep coming back. Most of my clients today have been with me for many years and it is such a joy to see them continue to experience fitness and continue to improve their health!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When I chose to start a family, I found a huge bump in my plans. I owned a Personal Training Studio that I had put my all into. The schedule and time required to keep that space growing by myself was just not possible with two little kids. I had to make the tough decision to close that studio and keep my business mobile. As hard as it was at the time and as much as it hurt my ego to admit I couldn’t do it all it’s a very sustainable business model for where I’m at in this stage of life. It works for me and for my clients really well. Sometimes what we envision for our future selves doesn’t exactly pan out, but allowing the path to unfold organically can pay off big time!

what should we know about Erin Kendall Fitness? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My Personal Training business spans from in-person sessions to an online group program where I can reach people from anywhere with workout videos and monthly challenges. I think my clients appreciate my kind yet firm approach. I expect my clients to push themselves during each session, but not to a point where they never want to workout again. Slow and steady wins the race. Fitness should be sustainable, rewarding and energizing. Creating a relationship with my clients has naturally helped us to continue down the path of “push hard, feel amazing!” Our sessions span over many stages in life. While many other things in life change, pivot and can become uprooted I can be their constant. No matter what else is going on in the world we can spend time just thinking about reps, sets, breathing and listening to our bodies.

It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
For my clients, I use the myfitnesspal app. It allows us to stay connected when they’re not in session with me. For my business I listen to many podcasts including the Being Boss, Boss Mom, Online Marketing Made Easy and All Up In Your Lady Business. Books that I’ve really enjoyed are You Are A Badass, The Gifts of Imperfection and The Compound Effect to name a few.
