Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Laird.
Jamie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My parents, who are not originally from San Diego, did a lot of traveling before settling here and their stories and travels inspired me to seek my own adventures. I wanted so badly to go to college in another state or study abroad but I could not afford it so instead I went to community college for a few years before transferring to a local university while working three jobs to help with expenses. I also took any odd jobs I could fit in with my end goal being to save up a good amount of money to take a month long road trip around the continental U.S. When I graduated, gas was almost $5.00 a gallon, and being under 25, I would have incurred a big fee to rent a car. I scrapped the idea and instead searched for a job that allowed me to make my own schedule.
Even though I was happy and comfortable with life, I felt that I was missing something because I kept putting off my dream of seeing the world for later. So, I decided it was now or never. I did countless research on the best deals and did my best to schedule everything else going on in my life around my travel goals. I’m glad that I did!
My family (mostly my parents) wanted to know where I was, if I was safe, and how my trips were going so I started a blog to keep them updated. I met so many wonderful people with the same dreams along the way that I started recommending them in my blogs. Now, I get to work with and learn from inspiring people from different countries that I have met through travel blogging. It’s definitely not an easy path but it’s been a path worth traveling.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In the beginning, I constantly let myself get discouraged by comparing myself to others. We all try to put our best face forward especially on social media, but the truth is everyone has their own struggles big and small. My advice is cliche but it has worked for me so far: Listen to your heart, take it a day at a time, celebrate your wins, learn from your losses, and always be grateful to people who support you.
What should we know about Autumn Aquarius Adventures? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a writer, a social media manager, and a tour guide! Brands trust me to weave their story together using my skills in creative writing, photography, and video editing. Securing partnerships with brands is hard work and doesn’t fully pay the bills, so I supplement my income by being a guide for tourists (and locals) in my hometown. I love sharing the history and culture of San Diego with people, and the best thing about this job is that I still meet inspiring people from all over the world. Meeting different people and learning their stories are my favorite things about traveling!
For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
It’s true, women today still face many unique challenges. Some are the same ones our grandmothers, and mothers faced, some are totally new to this era, but I feel like just being born in this generation and in this country affords us so many unique opportunities as well. More women are establishing their own businesses, traveling solo, and taking charge of their professional, social, and personal lives. We still have a ways to go, but so far, we are on the right track.
