Conversations with the Inspiring Kasandra Romero

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kasandra Romero.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Ever since I was 13, I gravitated towards makeup, I started off with just mascara and gloss since k wasn’t allowed to use makeup. Mascara and gloss was the look from 7th grade all the way to sophomore year in high school. Around April or May of 2018, I started doing my eyebrows and applying concealer, it was bad!! But practice and dedication helped me a lot! Forward to December of 2018, I started to play around with eyeshadow only because one of my closest friends gave me as a gift the Jaclyn Hill Palette, which I completely adore!! Of course, I wasn’t good at first but eventually, you see the progress. On January of this year, I decided to create a makeup account on Instagram. It was just a hobby and mostly for fun, all I wanted was to show my art and hopefully help people who were starting to do their makeup, since I know it can be a struggle. But look at me right now, being interviewed for an article for SD Voyager!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
For me, to get at where I am right now wasn’t really hard but there were small bumps throughout the way such as not having a camera for my pictorial or having the right brushes/equipment to do the makeup, yet I always found a way. I always found a way to do my makeup even if I didn’t have the right tools or even find a phone! Makeup is supposed to be fun which is why I’m not too hard on myself about it because it’s supposed to make YOU feel comfortable and make YOU feel confident. So far, everyone has been very supportive in my comments or even through a DM, which I love and appreciate it a lot, yet I know it’s not the case for others, but let me tell you something, what you’re doing is for you and you only! You are you, you are your own person and you do things the way YOU like. Don’t let anyone stop you for doing what you love and always give everything you got to what you love.

Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m a lesbian, 16-year-old junior in high school, I’m an aspiring makeup artist. I know myself as an aspiring makeup artist and writer and a dancer, yet my family and friends would only know me as a dancer. I’m not really open to the fact if me writing, in fact, some of my friends and family don’t even know I have a makeup account. My makeup is my brand, what I do for fun is my brand and I’m proud of myself for improving my makeup skills/techniques and having the courage to make a makeup account. I believe that both natural beauty and makeup beauty are beautiful, they are both you and in both ways, you look beautiful!

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
Throughout years women all around the globe have been oppressed and have been seen as less but as time passes by we have shown men that it’s not true. Us, women get pressured from society to be someone we’re not or to do things we don’t want to do and I think it’s hard for women leaders and it has been. Women leaders don’t usually get taken seriously, but you know what’s so special about us? That women don’t give up, we fight and fight because we will be validated and we will be seen as important because we are important. Women leaders are the woman of our time, they are the ones who your daughters or sisters or cousins, etc. will look up to and be shown and taught how strong women power is, how we’re more than what give ourselves credit for or how we’re beyond society wants us to be. Women leaders and even women everywhere have it tough, but we fight hand in hand.
