Conversations with the Inspiring Mandy Chuey and Erika Veduccio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mandy Chuey and Erika Veduccio.

Mandy and Erika, please share your story with us.
We are both moms in Carlsbad. We moved to Carlsbad a few years ago and we’re looking for local things to do with our families.

Erika, originally from Boston, moved to Carlsbad from New Hampshire with her husband and three kids. She launched MK Carlsbad in the Spring of 2015. Macaroni Kid is a National Platform where publishers have the opportunity to own their own business. Publishers produce a weekly newsletter and website featuring local events and businesses in their community. Erika was a publisher in Southern NH for 5 years and it was only natural to open a site for families living in her new community of Carlsbad.

I (Mandy) moved with my husband and two kids from Oakland. I am passionate about community and it felt like the perfect fit to the MK Carlsbad. The two of us met at a women’s day beach party and immediately hit it off. The rest is history! We have been working together for over a year. With 5 kids between us and 5 schools, countless activities and sports, we are constantly in the know of what’s what is the world of families!

Together, we focus on delivering a free weekly newsletter and online calendar to engage local families living in Carlsbad, Encinitas and Solana Beach. Our events calendar lists local activities. All the events are hyperlinked and complete with all the information families need to plan their weekly fun.

We love working with local businesses. So many locally owned businesses have exciting events for the community. We feature the businesses by highlighting their content. These businesses help us provide this free resource to our local families in Carlsbad, Encinitas and Solana Beach. Telling stories about local owners and businesses are our passion. It fuels us to feature their unique stories and share them with our readers.

Carlsbad is growing rapidly. Our newsletter currently reaches 2,700 local subscribers each week.

Each week, we attend the Carlsbad Farmers Market with a free craft for kids and families at Choice Juicery, 430 Carlsbad Village Drive. This weekly event has become extremely popular and gives parents a chance to talk and meet. The local kids look forward to it. Meeting with the community and parents face to face allows us to share the website and our along with our social media channels including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest.

Erika and I recognize many people are not from Carlsbad originally. We believe we provide a service for parents and kids. It’s always a joy to meet our readers, run fun giveaways and prepare articles that interest families.

Macaroni Kids Carlsbad is a great way to find great, local family things to do.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a small business, it was hard to get started. Day by day, event by event we have strived to build an excellent product. Our founder Joyce often says, “It’s a marathon, not a sprint”. We have a shell with this painted quote in the office that reminds us each day, we get closer. Being small local business owners, we have discovered that what you put into your business if often what you get out of it. We are not afraid to try new things, learn new skills and be flexible with out clients. In the world of Digital media, things are always changing. That’s what fuels us!

Advice for young women starting their journey:
Take risks, set goals, feel good, know your why and don’t be afraid to fly!

what should we know about Macaroni Kid Carlsbad? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Specialize in community building. Helping businesses connect with local families. Connecting families to local businesses and events. The articles that we feature on our website is content marketing. The main reason families typically visit our site is for our Event Calendar, a one-stop shop for family events in Carlsbad, Encinitas and Solana Beach. The content we feature and a highlight is quick, information that families can read on their phone in between activities like soccer practice and karate.

Our brand is personal. We connect with our readers at local families events and in some cases know their name.

What sets us aside from other businesses? We’re moms, our readers trust us. Our connections are old school. We are not just a company, we are two moms committed to our community and to sharing information for the betterment of our community. We want EVERYONE to know where the events are, where to get their kid’s teeth cleaned and the best date nights in town.

It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
Recently, I read the book 4DX and have implemented these practices in my work week. The idea of the book is to decrease the “whirlwind” that we all experience at work and in general life. The book walks you through how to determine a WIG (Wildly Important Goal) and plan out the steps to be more focused on our intentions and tasks. It has has a great impact on how I task myself and enabled me to work smarter not harder.
