Conversations with the Inspiring Megan Welker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Welker.

Megan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I got my first camera in high school and considered myself a hobbyist for several years. I was going to school to get my Bachelor’s in psychology, and I always like to say photography snuck up on me. I went to a photo meet up in San Francisco – which is where a bunch of photographers and models meet up at a spot to hang out and shoot – and I was in love with the community and the opportunities that photography created. I started taking photography more seriously as I found out it was a great way to connect with a community around me, and the more I posted, the more people wanted to work with me and hire me. I finished up my last year of schooling as I grew my photography business and officially went full-time in January 2018 when I graduated.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting my business has consisted of a lot of late nights, a lot of ‘no’s in order to keep myself sane, and a crazy amount of hard work and investment. I think the biggest struggle was learning that I couldn’t just take pretty photos – I had to learn about business and marketing in order to be successful. For about every hour, I spend actually shooting, I probably spend another 5-10 hours emailing, editing, marketing, etc.

I don’t think I could have figured it out if I was on my own, so my best advice would be to embrace community over competition. Find other people who are in the same boat as you or are just a step ahead and discuss what has worked, what hasn’t, and just find someone to talk to. Find a mentor, so they can help fast track your business. Also, be patient. Growing a business takes time. “Overnight success” isn’t actually real.

What should we know about Meg’s Marvels Photography? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I started out as a portrait photographer, but have transitioned into primarily photographing couples and wedding photographers. I’m located in the SF Bay Area most of my time, loving NorCal’s wonders!

I like to say that I’m all about natural light, natural locations, and natural interaction. People who know me know I love spending time outdoors – running around in the waves at the beach, climbing into trees, prancing through flower fields. My boyfriend always jokes that he can tell how good my shoot was by how much sand I track into the house.

My friends and clients also know that I have a soft spot for long, flowy dresses and 90% of the people I work with embrace this!

In the end, the thing I am most proud of is the experience I provide for couples. My goal is for sessions to be fun, low-stress experiences and create an environment where we can just embrace our location and have fun. I try to make the process easy from the first inquiry until after I deliver my gallery. I like to be friends with my couples and connect past our work together.

Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
This is something I’ve noticed more lately. I actually grew up in theatre and find that this really helps me out introducing prompts and running sessions. Not only do I have a better idea of how staging can create a mood, but it means that I’m not afraid to be silly or dramatic if it makes my couple laugh.
