Conversations with the Inspiring Paulette Povar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paulette Povar, creator of the PaulyJen️❤ Belt Bag.

Paulette, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Being a lover of design, music, and fashion, I felt inspired to create my belt bag with options™.  I started playing with the idea of a new type of bag because fanny packs had begun to increase in popularity again around the time that I started PaulyJen. My Belt Bags are all about functional fashion.

My vision was to create a bag with versatility, one that didn’t compromise the fashion element by being too functional. I decided that redesigning the classic ‘clutch’ and adding the utility of the fanny pack would be the ideal solution for my line. PaulyJen bags are known as being functional fashion-having the simple snaps on the back that allow you to take off your bag without removing your belt. I felt both the fanny pack and the clutch apart from one another, lacked utility and styling options. PaulyJen gives you the best of both worlds with options to wear your bag the way you see fit. You can wear a PaulyJen belt bag on your hip, crossbody (with a Pauly “Multitasker” Belt) or with your own belt, toss it in your tote, or use it as a clutch. I wanted to create a bag that lets women personalize it to their own style. These bags are made to be flexible enough to adapt to any occasion.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has been bumpy at times, smooth at others, and there have been many obstacles along the way. I would encourage young entrepreneurs to do their homework, and think about every step that involves their business. Ask people questions, get yourself mentors, and do your research. Once you have a better understanding of the in’s & out’s of your industry, you’ll know at least what’s steps need to be taken. It’s easy enough to come up with an idea and start running with it, but it’s important to know where you’re going, and how to get there. I’ve had to backtrack a few times along my journey, but these obstacles I use to reflect and improve what I am doing. You can only learn by doing. It takes a lot of perseverance and tenacity, because it will get overwhelming at times. If you are in love with what you do, even when the roads are rough, it’s worth it in the end. There is so much involved with building a business, and it can be very isolating as an entrepreneur. So it’s very important to surround yourself with other encouraging, insightful, and knowledgeable people, so you have the support to get through the hard times. When you work for yourself, your wins are in how people respond to what you have made. Because in life, not all roads are straight and smooth. The best advice that I can give, is to keep going and cherish the fact that you have made something with a purpose. Also remember to get help, outsource tasks, and balance work and life. Write everything down, create a routine, and prioritize your time. And most importantly remember to take care of yourself.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into PaulyJen’s story. Tell us more about the business.
I like to call myself a designer with a passion for functional fashion. I am a conceptual artist who loves to innovate and function as a businesswoman who enjoys marketing. My passion was to create a line of luxury & lifestyle leather belt bags/clutches and accessories that were versatile enough for any woman on the go.

I think I have accomplished designing a wonderful bag that serves its purpose in allowing women to wear their belt bag the way you want. It’s effortless and liberating to have the flexibility to be hands free or use the bag in various ways. I wanted to design a belt bag for myself and all women that could fit any mood or activity. Whether you are out walking your dog, shopping, rocking out at a festival, or traveling around the world, I wanted a product every woman has in their wardrobe.

My first launch was at Kaaboo, a well-known music festival back in September 2019, with a successful turnout of women from all over the world. The experience confirmed the need for this product, and that the demand was there. Which couldn’t make me happier! I had people vacationing from out of the country visit my booth at Kaboo, and I was ecstatic by how  excited they were about the PaulyJen brand.

It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I have used many apps that people share with me, or my social media and photography team, and it gives me tons of ideas. I haven’t had the time yet to follow podcasts or blogs. However, I’m always learning and as I have more help with my business, I would love to find the time to find other resources that could help me expand and grow.
