Conversations with the Inspiring Tanya Bras

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanya Bras.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As far back as I can remember, I’ve always had a camera in my hand! Disposable cameras were popular when I was a child and I would always have multiples of them to take an endless number of pictures of my friends and all the fun memories we were making. In high school, I took a photography class where we learned the fundamentals of photography and were able to develop our own film in the darkroom. I enjoyed everything about the class and begged my parents for a “real” camera. For Christmas, my parents got me my first camera, a 35mm Canon rebel! I can’t tell you how many photos I took over the next 2 years of high school, but what I can tell you is that there are 5 shoe boxes full of prints in my closet!

In 2006, my senior year of high school, I lost my grandfather to Alzheimer’s disease. I now know that I have a greater chance of inheriting the disease and that one day I may not remember specific moments from my life. Later in 2011, my father unexpectedly went missing. My oldest daughter was 2.5 years old at the time and I realized I had minimal photos of her and my father and minimal photos of my father and I once I became a teenager. Between these two events, something sparked inside me and I wanted to take pictures of everything in my life. Over the years, as I followed my own children around watching them grow through the eye of my viewfinder, my passion for photography started to grow. I documented everything my silly girls experienced and I take comfort in knowing that I have those photos to look back on. Being able to look back on our memories, recall the small details and evoke every feeling that was felt in that moment, just by looking at a photograph, is what’s special to me. I wanted to be able to do this for other’s as well and that is when I started my photography business journey.

Has it been a smooth road?
My photography journey has not been a walk in the park, but the struggles that I have been faced with have only helped me grow as a person and as a photographer. My husband and I were both active duty Marines when I started my journey and that proved to be a struggle in itself. Now, balancing life with 3 daughters, pursuing my college degree in Psychology, and having an active duty spouse with an ever-changing schedule are some of the obstacles we face every day.

My advice for other women who are starting their photography journey is to make an effort to learn something new every day. Challenge yourself to be better tomorrow than you were today. Photography is all about learning; whether it’s fundamentals, technique, editing, documenting or learning about people’s stories there is always something new to learn. Be yourself and do not compare yourself to any other photographers because your vision is not the same. Enjoy who you meet along the way and build relationships within the photographer community.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Sweet Snappin’ Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a natural light lifestyle photographer. I enjoy chasing down gorgeous light and capturing intimate connections between couples and families! My goal for all of my sessions is to allow people to be themselves while creating memories. Every couple or family that I work with is completely different and I love the vibes that each they bring to each session. I am known for bold, rich colors and incorporating gorgeous locations into my sessions. What sets me apart from others is my willingness to travel and create beautiful images in not so ordinary locations. I pride myself on being adventurous and having fun throughout my sessions. I bring my personality with me to every session which helps my clients feel comfortable and able to interact and be goofy with each other. If my clients are enjoying themselves, it allows me to be creative and capture candid moments. You can expect a session filled with laughter, tickle fights, ear sniffing and corny jokes!

I also photograph engagements, children, maternity and military homecomings and I hope to venture into destination elopements and weddings in the near future.

It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I like the app called weye feye-XSories because it allows me to control my camera from my phone. Being able to control my camera from my phone allows me to get in the frame with my children from time to time!

  • Prices start at $275.00 for couples, families, and maternity
  • Cake Smash, Lifestyle Newborn, Fresh 48 & Seniors $250.00
  • Military Homecomings $400.00
