Conversations with the Inspiring Veronica Lara-Aguilar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Veronica Lara-Aguilar.

Veronica, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in Los Angeles and started right out of high school in a fashion design program in community college. We did our first fashion show and worked with the cosmetology department to help with their models. When I moved and couldn’t find the right school for me to finish my fashion design program, I knew I was still passionate about doing something creative, so I remembered the cosmetology program at the community college I had attended and decided to apply to get my cosmetology degree.

I’ve always been a hard worker; it’s something my mom always instilled in me. So, as I finished my cosmetology degree, I started looking for jobs and at the moment, I couldn’t find jobs that had continuing education and support and I ended up at an Aveda salon that had all of that although the only position they had was for a nail technician. I saw this as a door opening that I wanted to take and have been doing nails for 12 years.

About six years ago, I desired to venture off on my own as a nail tech with the intent of getting into hair and makeup. The first two years, I invested in every possible class and reached out to any possible mentor. I received some of the best advice from a friend who suggested for me to reach out to other hair and makeup artists and see if they needed an assistant. After all, what could they say but “no”? And even if they do, at least you’re now on their radar for future things. I knew that I wouldn’t be able to do this on my own so I took myself out of my comfort zone and emailed and traded my nail services for classes with anyone that was willing.

I still make that a large part of my business of investing and committing to continuing my education. Now, six years in the hair and makeup industry, I am reaching goals I could only just imagine when I started.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t been and at times, it still isn’t. I had a hard time building myself up and trying to create what I now have. I often tried to prove to myself and compare myself to others when I should have been more focused on what I really needed and clearly see the people that wanted to help me.

Don’t let yourself get comfortable; place your self with women that shine a light on you and do the same to others as well. You may do a lot of things for free but that only means you’re opening several doors for your future.

What should we know about Hair & Makeup by Veronica? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a hair stylist and makeup artist, primarily for weddings. I specialize in Temptu airbrushing makeup. I feel like I’m still finding myself still as an artist but I think that airbrushing helps with creating flawless natural skin so I am known for that. I am proud that I am a mom of two little ones six and three and can have a business and organize my life, their lives, and the most special day for our brides. I feel that because I have been working in a salon environment for 14 years, I can easily have a conversation with most of my clients and ensure that they know they are the center of my attention.

Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
It’s not just one person I look up to or inspires me. I think it changes because I change and I’m learning about who I’m and what I’m capable of. When I was younger my mom was who I looked up to. She was brought her as a teenager no English no schooling, living in the remote jungles of Mexico and was able to support us to the best of her abilities. As I grew up there were teachers friends and coworkers. I’m being molded by the community I surround myself with.
