Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Melbrod.

Hi Alexis, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Sloane Ainsley is named after the inspiration behind the site, my loving daughter, Sloane. Her favorite game to play during quarantine was “hotel.” Quite ironic being that we had no idea when we would be going to a hotel or traveling next. Sloane loved picking out her outfits, getting out her suitcase and pretending to jump on an airplane to head to some far-off, tropical destination. It made me think about the trip we had just taken at the end of January 2019.

We had the most wonderful time with family but, like every trip we take, it always starts off with stressing over what to pack. It dawned on me that I should be more like my daughter. I needed to refocus my energy into getting organized and excited for a trip and vowed then and there that I would never waste another minute stressing over what I was going to pack. This realization birthed a new system and approach to my closet. The idea is to create a chic, easy and versatile wardrobe that, without much thought, could be packed at a moment’s notice. With a closet full of clothes, I would know exactly what to wear. That is our mission at Sloane Ainsley; to curate a timeless travel wardrobe for the chic traveler.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I believe the road of a start-up business is anything but smooth. However, I knew when I launched the site, there would be obstacles, and I also knew that the most challenging experiences in my life thus far have proved to be the most rewarding.

One of the many challenges of launching an online retail store is competing with the larger names in the e-commerce world. They simply have the buying power and capital to carry more brand and style options, size and color offerings, etc. I am trying to turn this obstacle into an opportunity by focusing on the boutique nature of our site- curating a tight selection of high-quality resort options for those who are seeking a more intimate shopping experience. Near or far, I want to develop a relationship with all of my clients so that I can help direct them into a wardrobe they feel confident in and excited to wear. I am looking to build these e relationships because I know there are many women, like myself, who simply don’t have the time to go and shop in person but are still looking for a personal shopping experience.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Sloane Ainsley is a woman-owned online boutique specializing in outfitting clients for their warm-weather travels. With a passion for travel and a love for resort wear, I try to curate wardrobes for travelers who are looking for versatile pieces so they can condense packing without compromising their style.

Ironically, I launched a site focused on travel during Covid 19. I was confident we would eventually find ourselves on the other side of this pandemic and I felt that travel would resume and when it did, I wanted to be set up and ready! I am proud that, despite a very dark and scary time in our history, I looked ahead to brighter times.

I feel one main thing that sets us apart from other online retailers is our focus on resort wear that is timeless, versatile and travels easily. Before a trip, I always found myself sifting through the numerous pages most websites have to curate my own travel wardrobe or to run in and out of every store at the mall trying to piece outfits together. At Sloane Ainsley, we strive to create a virtual boutique experience where we offer one on one appointments to learn our client’s needs prior to curating their personal wardrobe. There are a million retail options out there; however, we try to make ours as personal as possible. We want to know more than what size you wear and what colors you gravitate towards. At Sloane Ainsley, our goal is to develop meaningful and long-standing relationships with our clients.

What matters most to you?
Family is and always will be what matters most to me. I started this business out of a desire to follow a dream I had since I was a little girl. The only thing holding me back from pursuing this dream was my fear of it taking away time from my family. Rather than view this new venture as taking away from my kids, I decided to look at this as an opportunity to teach my children by example. I want them to see what it takes to build something from the ground up. More importantly, my husband and I want to teach our children the importance of a strong work ethic and that your most powerful asset is a positive mindset. Mindsets are molded at a young age and we hope that our children will be reminded daily that there are many things out of our control. What we can control every day is our attitude in life and desire to persevere in even the most challenging of times.
