Conversations with Auti Kamal

Today we’d like to introduce you to Auti Kamal.

Hi Auti, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
Dance has always been a huge part of my life! I was put in little girls’ ballet at the young age of 3 and truly never looked back. It seems dance became an even bigger part of my identity in college when I was challenged as an artist. I was pushed to look at myself and my artistry through a different lens, which eventually led me to exploring movement on camera. The way movement is captured on camera is just so striking, it caught my attention immediately.

From my early exploratory days, I ventured into creating content myself. I learned very quickly that I love being on camera and even more so, teaching on camera. Through an immense amount of dedication and consistency, Miss Auti was created. Now we have over half million beautiful dancers in our community.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As an artist, I move quickly and impulsively, but I’ve always loved that aspect of art. You can work slowly and deliberately or just go, go, go and see what the result is. For me, I’m “pedal to the medal”, through and through. This way of being can sometimes lead to hardship. As much as I collect wins, I also collect major lessons. One of the main struggles along the way has been asking for help, trusting in others, and accepting that my journey will look different than my fellow dance industry professionals. I’ve had to teach myself over the last couple of years to lean on others and that teamwork is in fact the best route to success. It’s been so incredible working with my creative partner, Brayden Curtis and father, Farzin Kamal. They both bring such different skill sets to the table and together we have built a partnership of support and growth.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My dance brand is all about inclusivity, accessibility, and joy! The tutorials, classes, and vlogs I put out there are meant for every single dancer. Whether you’re just starting out, returning to dance after a long break, or wanting to polish existing technique, I have something for you. When I teach, I teach with self-love and encouragement at the forefront of my mind.

Dance sometimes gets a bad reputation of being exclusive, harsh on a dancer’s body image and confidence, as well as taxing on the physical body. That bad reputation has some truth to it, so that’s where I decided to come in and shake things up. When a dancer takes lessons from me, whether on Youtube or through my training app, they know they’ll be receiving fantastic dance education, as well as developing their confidence, body awareness, and overall love of dance.

Any big plans?
I am really loving watching my training app, Ti & Me Studio, grow. It absolutely warms my heart to see more and more dancers joining the community and finding their place in the dance world. I look forward to continuing on in my pursuit of providing value to all kinds of dancers around the world. I always say I have the most incredible, kind community and it’s the absolute truth. It brings me immense happiness to be a part of someone’s dance journey. How lucky am I?
